🚔 Senior Knysna officials arrested

The SAPS Political Killings Task Team has arrested a mayor, municipal manager and chief financial officer in connection with an alleged corruption scheme involving a municipal security services contract.

Police allege that a businessman was being solicited for kickbacks to keep his contract and had already paid hundreds of thousands of rand. The three are expected to appear in court on Monday, 5 October. Police have not yet publicly explained in detail why the Political Killings Task Team is handling what has been described as a corruption investigation.

📱 South Africa gets its first working Digital ID prototype

Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber unveiled and demonstrated South Africa’s first working Digital ID prototype today.

This is not simply a photo of an ID card on a phone. The system is linked to biometrics and the population register and is designed to allow South Africans to verify their identity remotely and securely control access to their information.

It remains a prototype and is not yet available for general use.

🏥 Auditor-General raises serious concerns over health departments

The Auditor-General told Parliament that provincial health audit outcomes regressed during 2025/26, with repeated findings and weak accountability continuing to affect the sector.

Medico-legal claims against health departments stood at approximately R50.2 billion, while about R1.57 billion was actually paid in settlements during the year.

The Auditor-General highlighted weak accountability, inadequate ownership of controls, limited consequences for non-performance and a reactive approach to governance.

With implementation of the NHI remaining a major national policy issue, these findings will add to the debate around governance, accountability and the state’s capacity to manage the health system effectively.

💰 *Nearly 500 companies still not blacklisted*

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana told Parliament that National Treasury cannot independently blacklist suppliers flagged by the Special Investigating Unit unless the relevant state entity formally initiates the restriction process.

Of 509 referrals sent to Treasury, only 18 have been blacklisted, while 491 remain under review. Eskom, Transnet and other affected entities now face questions over why the necessary processes have not been completed.

🚔 *Questions over policing in Kempton Park*

The DA criticised Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi after comments that policing challenges at Kempton Park were already known or “old news”.

This follows heightened concern over the murders of women across Ekurhuleni. During an oversight visit, Parliament’s Police Committee chair Ian Cameron raised concerns about policing capacity, including electricity problems, vehicle shortages and staffing pressures at local stations. The Gauteng government says the challenges have previously been raised and that intensified policing operations are continuing.

🇿🇦 *37,942 undocumented foreign nationals deported*

Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber revealed in a parliamentary reply that the Department of Home Affairs detained and deported 37,942 undocumented foreign nationals between January and August 2026.

The largest numbers were nationals from:
🇿🇼 Zimbabwe – 12,407
🇲🇼 Malawi – 10,725
🇲🇿 Mozambique – 9,548
🇱🇸 Lesotho – 4,435

The figures relate specifically to people detained and deported by Home Affairs and do not include arrests carried out by other law-enforcement agencies.

⚖️ *Malema gets leave to appeal*

EFF leader Julius Malema has been granted leave by the Eastern Cape High Court to appeal his fi***rm-related convictions.

Malema was convicted last year following the 2018 incident in Mdantsane and was sentenced in April to an effective five years’ imprisonment. The magistrate had refused him leave to appeal his convictions, but the High Court has now granted his petition for the matter to be heard by a Full Bench.

📉 *Unemployment rises to 33.6%*

South Africa’s official unemployment rate increased from 32.7% to 33.6% in the second quarter of 2026.

Separate Stats SA employment figures released this week showed that the formal non-agricultural sector lost another 14,000 jobs during the quarter — with manufacturing recording the biggest decline.

🇿🇦🇺🇸 *More tension between SA and the US*

Relations between Pretoria and Washington remain strained after US Ambassador Leo Brent Bozell III was summoned by DIRCO over what the department described as “undiplomatic conduct”.

Bozell has publicly said Washington put five issues to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s government, including concerns around the “Kill the Boer” chant, land expropriation and BEE requirements affecting US investment. Pretoria says it remains committed to dialogue with the US while defending South Africa’s sovereignty and domestic policies.

🚔 *DA calls for stronger response to organised crime*

Following two mass killings in the Western Cape and on the West Rand in which 27 people were killed, the DA called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to urgently appoint a permanent Minister of Police.

The party said the new minister should have a clear mandate to stabilise SAPS, strengthen Crime Intelligence and coordinate an intelligence-driven response to organised criminal networks.

The DA also called for a multidisciplinary operation involving Crime Intelligence, specialised detectives, the Hawks, fi***rm tracing and forensic teams to identify the networks linked to mass shootings, gangsterism and extortion.

🇿🇦 *R830 million estimated for diplomatic property renovations*

In a separate matter, a parliamentary reply to a DA question revealed that the estimated cumulative cost of renovations to South Africa’s embassy buildings and other foreign assets currently stands at R830 million.

The DA contrasted this with what it says is approximately R1.4 billion spent on aid and gifts to Cuba over the past decade, arguing that government spending priorities should place greater emphasis on maintaining South Africa’s diplomatic missions.

The party said it would continue advocating for changes to the DIRCO budget, with a stronger focus on South Africa’s diplomatic service, international relations and economic growth.

As you know, the City does not always respond as quickly as we would like when issues are reported. Yes, these matters are the City’s responsibility, and yes, residents pay rates and taxes for these services.

But I’m also fortunate to work with some incredible volunteers in the DA who are always willing to step in and help where they can.

Today I want to share a video of one of those volunteers. When I asked for help with a problematic tree, Eli simply said, “I’ll sort it out.” And she did — problem solved! 🌳👏

What a lekker way to celebrate Heritage Day in Ward 69! 💙

Neighbours, friends and families came together in Kort Street, Eldoraigne, for a good old-fashioned community street braai — fires burning, food on the go, children joining in and plenty of time to simply sit together and connect.

This is what community is about: knowing your neighbours, sharing a meal and building stronger relationships right where we live.

Thank you to everyone who joined and contributed to making the day special.

🔵 PSIRA UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT

The DA has called on Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia to urgently intervene in what it describes as a management crisis at the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA).

PSIRA is currently at the centre of an investigation involving the SIU and Hawks relating to approximately R130 million. The Authority is also operating without its critical oversight body, the Council, while its CEO is effectively running the organisation without that structure in place.

This week, PSIRA was raided by the SIU and Hawks.

This matters: South Africa’s private security sector has more than half a million registered security officers — vastly outnumbering the SAPS. An industry of this scale needs strong and credible oversight.

🇿🇦🇺🇸 LAMOLA CONTINUES US DIPLOMATIC PUSH

International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola continued his engagements in the United States, meeting Senator Bernie Sanders and addressing the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation.

Lamola presented South Africa as an example of racial reconciliation and told his audience that South Africa has the largest white population outside the Northern Hemisphere — a claim that raises questions when countries such as Brazil, Argentina, Australia and Chile are considered.

His portrayal of racial harmony will also undoubtedly generate debate back home, particularly given the often highly charged racial rhetoric in South African politics.

🚑 GAUTENG EMERGENCY WORKERS SUSPENDED

The DA says 17 Gauteng Emergency Medical Services workers have been suspended for a month following a dispute over unpaid overtime.

According to the workers, they had been working more than 20 hours of overtime per month, while the province had stopped paying overtime. They maintain that they did not abandon patients or refuse to respond to emergencies.

The DA has raised concerns about the impact the suspensions could have on already stretched emergency services and called on the Gauteng Department of Health to ensure workers are properly compensated.

📌 Accountability matters — whether it is policing, diplomacy or frontline public services.
