The Tshwane Metro Police Department is proud to present a phenomenal woman who carries and embodies the spirit of courageous women of 1956, meet Superintendent Kearabetswe Hazel Nyauza.
Her career with the TMPD began in 2002 when she was appointed a Constable and deployed to Region 1 Sector 2 in Winternest, where she was introduced to the fundamentals of policing. She was later transferred to Region 3, Sector 2 in Pretoria Central. The move was driven by seeking a fast-paced and demanding environment, which will expose her to a wide range of policing responsibilities, including road policing, crime prevention and by-law enforcement.
In 2004, she was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. At the time, it was a largely male-dominated environment, but despite all, she looked up to the women who had broken barriers before and occupied senior positions. Their example showed her that courage is an essential quality to succeed in a demanding environment.
She is a Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) graduate with a challenging educational journey, she said, experiencing personal challenges of an abusive and toxic marriage. Balancing work, studies, and personal responsibilities was difficult.
She later joined VIP Protection, where she served as a Close Protector for two years. That's where she was exposed to a different dimension of policing such as security operations, protocol, risk awareness, professionalism, and working in environments involving senior officials and dignitaries.
Through hard work, she was eventually promoted to the rank of superintendent. Her promotion represented years of service, sacrifice, learning, perseverance, and growth. Superintendent Nyauza is currently part of the Region 6, Sector 2 management in Garsfontein, where her main focuses are by-law enforcement, crime prevention, visible policing, road policing, operational deployments, community safety, and joint law enforcement operations.
She is also involved in the TMPD Women's Network Forum. She described her involvement as an opportunity to contribute towards the empowerment, development, and advancement of women within the department. She said her life journey should be an encouragement to women who are currently facing difficult circumstances, that their lives have value, their dreams matter, and the future is worth fighting for.
With a beautiful smile on her face, she said, "I am a married woman and a mother of two." My family remains one of my greatest blessings and a source of strength and motivation. Being a mother has taught me valuable lessons about responsibility, patience, sacrifice, and unconditional love. I want my children to see through my life that education matters, hard work matters and also faith.
