STATEMENT BY ANCYL WARD 91 GREATER TSHWANE REGION
Monday 20 June

The ANCYL in Ward 91 of the Greater Tshwane Region would like to extend a revolutionary congratulatory message to our fellow comrade, leader and mentor, Cde Thokozile Didiza, for her new deployment as the African National Congress mayoral candidate for the City of Tshwane, the biggest metropolitan city in the country. As an ANC member in good standing in our ward, we have personal experience and knowledge of Cde Didiza’s unrelenting commitment to the work of the Congress Movement, providing leadership from branch level right up to the NEC of the ANC, Cde Didiza is a seasoned and an exemplary leader who espouses the objectives contained in “Through the Eye of the Needle”, she is a selfless leader who has notable history in serving with eloquent distinctions in all her deployments in government. We have no doubt that upon a much anticipated certain victory of the ANC in the August 3 Local Governement Elections, the City of Tshwane will indeed be in good hands under the leadership of our mbokodo.

The ANCYL in Ward 91 of Greater Tshwane further applauds and supports the National and Provincial leadership of the ANC for this intervention. This intervention demonstrates the ANC’s efforts not only to a strong will for strengthening the capacity of leadership in local government but also to eradicate the entrenched societal imbalance caused by patriarchy, which seeks to demean, exclude and discriminate against our mothers and sisters, this intervention demonstrates that the ANC affords women the space and opportunity to lead society. Cde Thokozile Didiza will enjoy our unencumbered support leading to the Local Government Elections and during her tenure as the mayor of Tshwane.

Accordingly, our best wishes are in order to Cde Parks Tau as the Joburg mayoral candidate and Cde Mzwandile Masina as the Ekhuruleni mayoral candidate, Gauteng is in good hands. Gauteng ANC victory is certain! In the same breath we wish the best of luck to the mayoral candidates announced by the NEC this past weekend.

Furthermore, we would like to pronounce our salutations to the outgoing leadership collective of the City of Tshwane led by Cde Sputla Ramokgopa for the firm foundations built to ignite excellence and advance interests of the citizens of this Mega City.
Once again, we would like to recognise all young lions on Father's Day yesterday who have taken upon the responsibility to guide, mentor, provide and protect our younger counterparts. We salute you qabane!

Amandla!

The leadership of the African National Congress Youth League in Ward 91 of the Greater Tshwane Region is incredibly impressed by the exceptional dedication and spirit of unity shown by activists participating in the protests at various campuses around the country and particularly in Tshwane.

Enemies of the revolution sitting in ivory towers continue to conspire against young people.

Young people have shown that they are by no means apathetic as is often alleged and they have proven that they can come together across class, race and gender divides in order to unite for a common goal. This goal is the attainment of a more reasonable fiscal dispensation at our nation's universities. Unreasonable pricing has led to the exclusion of thousands of promising young people from quality education and ultimately undermines our national interests and the developmental agenda.

As a branch of the Youth League of the ANC - the only legitimate voice of the people and the true liberation movement - we will continue to address issues of education within our own locality while engaging with the ideal of free education in our lifetime.

Aluta continua!
Victory is Certain!

As a committed revolutionary structure the ANCYL in Ward 91 of the Greater Tshwane Region would like to wish all mothers, sisters and daughters a progressive Women's Day.

We extend these best wishes while noting the successful congress of our Movement's fearless Women's League. In the same breath we wish the best of luck to the new national office bearers of the ANCWL:

President - cde Bathabile Dlamini
Deputy President - cde Sisi Ntombela
Secratery General - cde Meokgo Matuba
Deputy Secretary General - cde Weziwe Tikane
Treasurer General - cde Maite Nkoana Mashabane

Furthermore, we would like to pronounce our salutations to the former leadership collective led by cde Angie Motshekga in their relentless pursuit in advancing interests of women and fight against patriarchal tendencies which seek to demean, exclude and discriminate against our mothers, sisters and daughters. We have untainted confidence that the newly elected leadership collective led by cde Bathabile Dlamini will reinvigorate the ANCWL and unapologectically advance women's interests.

Once again, we would like to wish all women a revolutionary Women's Day in remeberance of the stalwarts of 1956!

Malibongwe!

The African National Congress Youth League in Ward 91 (Tshwane East) of the Greater Tshwane Region will be embarking on a campaign to secure an equitable dispensation with regards to language policy at public schools in our locality.

This campaign comes after several incidents of language discrimination at schools in the East of Tshwane came to the fore. Our view is that the use of language policy as an exclusionary measure disadvantages learners and undermines the values and mandate of public education. In our context we take this view specifically where Afrikaans-medium schools are concerned. It is wholly impractical for public schools to be providing single-medium Afrikaans education within the rapidly transforming urban settings.

The result of the single-medium approach is a situation where many non-Afrikaans speaking learners from our diverse communities, particularly black learners, Indian and English speaking white learners, cannot secure spaces in local schools that should be serving their community. In our capacity as an organisation dedicated to the well-being – particularly the education – of all young people, we will be agitating for a rapid change in language policy at schools in our area. Our aim is to see the inclusion of the currently excluded non-Afrikaans speaking learners as soon as reasonably possible.

We will campaign relentlessly and militantly in the pursuit of our goal. We do not dispute that Afrikaans is an official language nor do we dispute that the Afrikaans language should be taught in schools for its preservation. However, we echo the sentiments of the youth of 1976 who had opposed the imposition of a certain language as a medium of learning and teaching, to the exclusion of alternatives, in schools in close proximity to their homes wherein the demographics of the communities dictated otherwise.

Likewise, today's young people cannot be excluded from quality basic education in close proximity to their homes because they do not comply with an outdated language policy that directly contradicts the changed demographics of the communities surrounding the schools.

The Chairperson of the ANCYL Tshwane Ward 91, Cde Tshepo Masanabo was clear, "We will be demanding meetings with their governing bodies and we will make it clear that the time for the transformation of their institutions is now!"

He further called for parents, teachers and learners from across our diverse communities to join the campaign and take a stand against the exclusion of non-Afrikaans speaking learners from quality basic education close to home. The time for radical transformation is now!

*We have noted and fully support efforts by the MEC of Education to convert schools to dual medium.
