Smart and Sustainable Built Environments Conference 2015

Smart and Sustainable Built Environments Conference 2015 SASBE2015 draws on the momentum of previous SASBE events to develop smart built environment solution A technical tour is being planned for 11 December 2015.

SASBE2015 is the fifth in a global conferences series, with previous events being organized in Australia (2003), China (2006), The Netherlands (2009) and Brazil (2012). At global level, the conference is hosted by CIB (International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction) Work Commission 116, which shares the conference name. The South African event is collaboration betwe

en CSIR and the University of Pretoria and will be held in 9, 10, 11 December 2015, at the University of Pretoria, in Pretoria. SASBE2015 draws on the momentum of previous SASBE events to develop smart built environment solutions that address local and global sustainability issues. Limited timeframes and resources mean that smarter ways of rapidly improving sustainability performance of the built environment are urgently required. SASBE2015 provides the forum to define and test the instruments required for this change. Both scientific and technical streams will be included in the conference and proceedings of the conference will be published. Best papers from the conference will be considered (in revised form) for publication in the Smart and Sustainable Built Environment (SASBE) journal, published by Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

Speaker Introduction: Dr Dirk Conradie is a senior researcher in CSIR Built Environment Unit in Pretoria. Dirk obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Pretoria in 2001 with a thesis titled “The use of software systems to implement Case-Based Reasoning enabled intelligent components for architectural briefing and design”. He is part of a research group that focuses on predictive building performance analysis and climatic responsive design using passive techniques. His presentation will be on the quantification of the South African climate to support predictive simulation and passive design methods.

SPECIAL SESSION ON BUILDING REGULATIONS

As part of the conference, a special session of the CIB TG79 will focus on "The impact of climate change on the future direction of Building Regulation and Control". The main goal of this special session is to share international experience on the impact of climate change on the requirements of and responses from Building Regulation and Control. Contributors should report on challenges, innovative applications and recent research findings relating to theme. This session will bring together different but interrelated perspectives on how to approach this impact.

Should you wish to submit an abstract and paper, it could either be academic (peer-reviewed) or technical (non-peer reviewed). The following deadlines apply to this special session:

The abstract should be submitted before or on 31 August 2015.

Referee feedback will be given before or on 14 September 2015.

The final date for the full paper is 16 October 2015.

Referee feedback will be given before or on 30 October 2015.

The deadline for the final, revised papers (for inclusion in the electronic version of the conference proceedings) is 20 November 2015.

In order to have an impact, good research and projects need to be disseminated widely. One way of doing this is to publish in scientific journals and in the media. An interactive ‘Getting Published Workshop’ hosted by editors of a number of journals, such as Jay Yang (Smart and Sustainable Built Environments Journal) and Liesl Hattingh (Earthworks) will be included in SASBE2015 to provide participants with an insight in the publishing process and provide an opportunity of questions and answers.
