Prince Albert Municipality thanks SABC News for covering the ongoing concerns around road safety on the Swartberg Pass.

We appeal to all transport and trucking companies to please ensure that drivers comply with traffic regulations, road restrictions and all signage.

Heavy vehicles, vehicles longer than 7 m and caravans are not permitted on the Swartberg Pass. These restrictions are in place to protect road users, the road infrastructure and this important heritage route.

The Swartberg Pass is a provincial road, and the Municipality remains committed to working with the Western Cape Government and relevant role players to find practical, long-term solutions.

Prins Albert Munisipaliteit bedank SABC News vir die dekking van die voortgesette kommer oor padveiligheid op die Swartbergpas.

Ons doen ’n beroep op alle vervoer- en vragmotormaatskappye om asseblief te verseker dat bestuurders verkeersregulasies, padbeperkings en alle padtekens nakom.

Swaar voertuie, voertuie langer as 7 m en karavane word nie op die Swartbergpas toegelaat nie. Hierdie beperkings is daar om padgebruikers, padinfrastruktuur en hierdie belangrike erfenisroete te beskerm.

Die Swartbergpas is ’n provinsiale pad, en die Munisipaliteit bly verbind daartoe om saam met die Wes-Kaapse Regering en relevante rolspelers te werk om praktiese, langtermynoplossings te vind.

Ná die erge weerstoestande verlede Donderdag, wat skade in verskeie dele van die Wes-Kaap veroorsaak het, insluitend Prins Albert, het ons gemeenskap weer gewys wat moontlik is wanneer mense saamstaan.

Prins Albert Munisipaliteit bedank graag die gemeenskapslid, Joseph Steyn, wat ’n lughamerboor en kompressor aan die span beskikbaar gestel het toe hulle rots teëgekom het tydens die grawe van gate vir die nuwe elektriese pale.

Ons bedank ook die Sentraal-Karoo Distriksmunisipaliteit vir die beskikbaarstelling van ’n groot kragopwekker om die geaffekteerde area oor die naweek van krag te voorsien.

’n Spesiale woord van dank aan ons tegniese en veiligheidspanne wat onvermoeid deur die naweek gewerk het om te verseker dat krag in alle geaffekteerde areas herstel word. Dankie ook aan die munisipale bestuurder wat Saterdagoggend self ingespring het om te help waar nodig.

Verdere skade in die area het Eskom-lyne in die Prins Albert-vallei ingesluit, waaraan Eskom Saterdag aandag gegee het. Die plaaslike skougronde het ook ernstige dakskade opgedoen, en verskeie ander dakke is tydens die storm beskadig.

Dankie aan die gemeenskap vir u waaksaamheid, samewerking en die manier waarop veiligheidsinstruksies gevolg is.

Following the severe weather conditions last Thursday, which caused damage in many parts of the Western Cape, including Prince Albert, our community once again showed what is possible when people work together.

Prince Albert Municipality would like to thank community member Joseph Steyn for lending a pneumatic breaker (jackhammer) and compressor to the team when they encountered rock while digging holes for the new electrical poles.

We also thank the Central Karoo District Municipality for lending a large generator to power the affected area over the weekend.

A special word of thanks to our technical and safety teams who worked tirelessly over the weekend to ensure that power was restored in all affected areas. Thank you also to the municipal manager who stepped in on Saturday morning to assist where needed.

Other damage in the area included Eskom lines in the Prince Albert Valley, which Eskom attended to on Saturday. The local showgrounds also suffered severe roof damage, and several other roofs were damaged during the storm.

Thank you to the community for staying vigilant, working with us and following safety instructions.
