The South African Weather Service has issued two alerts for our region, valid Wednesday & Thursday, 3–4 June 2026:

🌨️ 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐲: 𝐕𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐝, 𝐖𝐞𝐭 & 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬:
Snow expected on mountain tops. Risk of hypothermia, livestock losses, and difficult travel over mountain passes.

Heavy rain - a cut-off low is bringing 25–100mm of rainfall. Risk of flooding, mudslides, and road damage including on mountain passes.

Please take note:
* Stay off mountain passes if possible
* Check on elderly neighbours and vulnerable community members
* Bring animals under shelter
* Avoid crossing flooded roads or streams

Prins Albert Munisipaliteit wil graag die 𝐖𝐞𝐬-𝐊𝐚𝐚𝐩𝐬𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐞 en die provinsiale padspanne bedank vir hulle werk aan die 𝑆𝑒𝑒𝑘𝑜𝑒𝑔𝑎𝑡 / 𝑇𝑖𝑒𝑟𝑏𝑒𝑟𝑔 𝑅𝑑 om die pad weer toeganklik te maak vir alle voertuie.

Ons waardeer die volgehoue pogings om toegang vir geaffekteerde gemeenskappe en padgebruikers te herstel.

Die Munisipaliteit sal ’n opdatering deel sodra Provinsie die pad as oop en veilig vir openbare gebruik verklaar.

Council has unanimously approved the Prince Albert Municipality's Final 2026/2027 MTREF Budget — a funded, disciplined budget that puts our communities first and keeps faith with the residents of Prince Albert, Leeu-Gamka and Klaarstroom.

Despite difficult economic conditions, we have worked hard to keep increases as affordable as possible — while continuing to invest in infrastructure, our people, and our future.

Key highlights:
✅ Budget unanimously approved — fully funded, with the R32 million shortfall eliminated
✅ Lowest residential property rates in the Western Cape — confirmed by the Western Cape Government’s own research
✅ Electricity increase reduced from a justified 25% to 17,5% — following public input and careful consideration of the impact on residents
✅ R4.3 million upgrade to the Odendaal Sports Field funded from municipal own funds — R1.7 million this year, and R2.6 million from 1 July 2026 — without grant funding or loans
✅ R14 million invested in roads and pavements from own funds over three years — extraordinary for a municipality our size
✅ Repairs and maintenance spending is well above National Treasury benchmark — we look after what we build
✅ General workers have been appointed permanently — investing in our own people
✅ EPWP funding secured — creating work in our communities
✅ Indigent households: free basic water and electricity units, free sewerage services and refuse removal
✅ Pensioners 60+ earning ≤ R13 500/month: subsidised services and a 35% rates rebate

Ten spyte van moeilike ekonomiese omstandighede het ons hard gewerk om verhogings so bekostigbaar as moontlik te hou — terwyl ons voortgaan om in infrastruktuur, ons mense, en ons toekoms te belê.

Sleutelhoogtepunte:
✅ Begroting eenparig goedgekeur — ten volle befonds, met die tekort van R32 miljoen uitgeskakel
✅ Laagste residensiële eiendomsbelastingkoerse in die Wes-Kaap — bevestig deur die Wes-Kaapse Regering se eie navorsing
✅ Elektrisiteitsverhoging verlaag van ’n geregverdigde 25% na 17,5% — ná openbare insette en deeglike oorweging van die impak op inwoners

🚧 UPDATE | Cango Caves Road Recovery Progress

Good progress continues on recovery efforts between Oudtshoorn and the Cango Caves following recent severe weather damage. 👷‍♂️🌧️

🪨 Initial slope stabilisation work is advancing steadily.

🚜 Debris removal operations from the roadway are expected to begin early next week, subject to weather and site safety conditions.

📅 If progress continues as planned and weather conditions remain favourable, the route could be cleared by 5 June 2026.

⚠️ Please note that final safety assessments will still need to be completed before the road can reopen to the public.

👏 Thank you to our engineers, contractors, technical teams, disaster management officials and local partners working around the clock to restore safe access as quickly as possible.

The 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 invites registered tourist guides to apply for the Night Sky Tourist Guide Training Programme, which focuses on Astro-tourism and Night Sky guiding.

This training aims to equip tourist guides with the knowledge and practical skills needed to develop and offer unique night sky tourism experiences.

Who can apply?
Registered tourist guides who:
• Are South African citizens or permanent residents
• Hold at least an NQF Level 2 tourist guide qualification in Nature, Culture and/or Adventure Guiding
• Have 1–2 years’ guiding experience
• Have good communication skills
• Are computer literate and have access to a device with stable internet for online training
