Ethelbert Child and Youth Care Centre

Ethelbert Child and Youth Care Centre We have been caring for, and loving the children of South Africa since our inception in 1907.

Ethelbert CYCC is a full-time haven for 60 orphaned and vulnerable children and youth — a place of safety, healing, and hope where young lives are nurtured, supported, and given the chance to thrive. Ethelbert Child and Youth Care Centre cares for 65 children that have been removed from their parents because of sexual and/or physical abuse, neglect, abandonment, and those orphaned because of HIV/A

ids. Ethelbert is not an orphanage: the majority of the children placed with us have parents and our ultimate goal is to see the children happily reunited with their parents who have been rehabilitated. All cases are cleared by the courts first and thus we work in conjunction with the Department of Social Welfare to ensure that these children are placed back with their families, if at all possible. Ethelbert’s main priority is to break the cycle of abuse, by providing children with a stable and loving environment, counselling and therapeutic support, which helps them overcome the trauma they have suffered, so that they can regain their self-respect and their confidence to achieve their dreams. Our child-orientated programmes, dedicated residential Social Worker and Child Care Workers help traumatised children to develop positive life-skills in a secure environment. At the same time our Social Worker works with the families, providing therapy and counselling to them, to ensure that they also receive support to overcome the reasons why their child was removed from their care.

Celebrating Women, Self-Care & Connection

This Women’s Day, the ladies of Ethelbert came together for a beautiful morning dedicated to celebrating women, prioritising self-care and recognising the importance of preventing burnout.

Dressed in shades of pink, we shared good food, plenty of laughter and a little time away from the busyness of our everyday roles to simply connect and celebrate one another.

A very special thank you to our wonderful guest speaker, Phindile Khumalo, Social Worker and Clinical Psychologist, who shared her knowledge and insight with us on self-care and burnout prevention. Her message was a valuable reminder that caring for ourselves is not a luxury. It helps us continue to show up meaningfully for the people who depend on us.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the morning so special, and to all the incredible women who form part of the Ethelbert family.

Happy Women’s Day!

Mandela Day 2026 | Turning Compassion into Action

Mandela Day once again reminded us that when a community comes together, extraordinary things happen.

A heartfelt thank you to FFS Refiners, Dromex, Syntech, Thusa, UPD, the Tamil Women's Movement, and the South Coast Circuit of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa for choosing to invest your time, generosity and kindness in our children.

Together you refurbished our playground equipment, filled our pantry with much-needed groceries, spoiled our children with thoughtful goody bags, provided delicious lunches, and created memories through toys, games and wonderful storytelling.

Every act of kindness, no matter how big or small, reminds our children that they are valued, loved and supported by a community that believes in their future.

Thank you for helping us make Mandela Day more than just a day—it became an experience of hope, joy and belonging.

Bingo!

Laughter echoed as the wonderful ladies from the Hillcrest Methodist Church Women's Auxiliary spent a fun-filled morning with our boys enjoying a lively game of Bingo.

There was plenty of excitement, friendly competition and, of course, lots of delicious prizes to be won! More importantly, the morning was filled with smiles, conversation and the simple joy of spending time together.

Thank you for sharing your hearts, your time and your generosity with our children. Days like these create memories that last long after the final number is called.

Celebrating a Life Well Lived

On Friday, 17 July 2026, we gathered to celebrate the remarkable life of Lionel Baney, one of Ethelbert's own, a past child, a former Board member, faithful supporter and lifelong champion of our children.

Together we shared memories, reflected on the lasting impact of his generosity, and gave thanks for a life lived in service to others. As a lasting tribute, we planted a tree in his memory—a symbol of the legacy he leaves behind and the many lives he helped nurture.

Lionel's kindness, gentle spirit and unwavering love for Ethelbert will never be forgotten. His roots will forever remain part of our story.

Rest peacefully, Lionel. Thank you for everything.
