MEMBER TALK TONIGHT

An MCSA Seed Collection of Endangered Plants
Kaleigh Murray, who did her PhD on climate-linked population declines of Quiver Trees, has identified four plants from the Magaliesberg that she is going to start a scientific collection on. What made her decide on those four? And what is conservation best practice for collecting & maintaining plant collections?

Come hear about the science behind the “conservation doing”. The project requires volunteers to help collect, sort, germinate the seeds, then plant out the seedlings. This means hiking the Magaliesberg with a purpose other than just hiking like a treadmill, but stopping to check for ripe seeds. How many are in the population where one collects the seed? Bring all your questions on this restoration project.

Closure of Climbing Crags for Verreaux Eagle Breeding

Please note that the following areas are closed for climbing from 1 April to 30 September. Some climbs are deemed too close to, or they pass through Verreaux Eagle nests, so please make sure there is no nest above you before starting a route.

The following climbing crags have identified nests in Gauteng and North West:
• Bronkies: Between 'Perch on This' and 'Devils Concubine'
• Wilgepoort: Between 'Mcfats LGP' and 'Bottleneck Bulge'
• Tonquani: Either side of 'Reunion Slab'
• Grootkloof: Either side of 'Lilliput Ridge'
• Dome South: 'Twilight Arete' and 'Revolver'
• Chosspile: The whole of 'Lord of the Rings' Crag

All nests are being monitored for activity by provincial specialists. Some nests also have motion sensitive cameras placed on them. If there is no activity by end of June, with consultation with eagle experts, we may open these sections to climbing again. There are many climbers and only a few pairs of eagles. Please remember we are in their space.

Please also note that Bolting anywhere on these crags is not permitted during this winter season. Rather wait the season out and make noise when it is appropriate to do so. If you do notice unfamiliar eagle activity, please send us a note [email protected]. It is always a treat to be greeted with their curious eagle eyes!

Patrolling plays an important role in maintaining MCSA-owned and managed properties and is a collaborative effort between MCSA members, Eco Rangers and landowners in the region.

Why we need Patrolling on our properties:
➔ Regular patrolling helps prevent illegal activities on our properties, which can harm the sensitive ecosystems of the Magaliesberg.
➔ Patrolling deters unauthorized access, unsafe behaviour and potential vandalism, ensuring that members and approved visitors use the properties responsibly. This creates a safer and more enjoyable experience for all.
➔ Routine patrols allow for early detection of trail erosion, damage to signage or structural issues, enabling timely maintenance.

Patrolling IS NOT about policing, confrontation and taking risks.
Patrolling IS about visible presence, awareness and friendly education.

We encourage MCSA Jhb members to get involved in the Patrolling Sub-committee - anyone can join and get involved in looking after the places we already know and love.

Our recent AGM once again indicated that MCSA Jhb Section has a diverse community of members who all deeply value the role that the Club plays in mountaineering.

Outgoing Chairman, Bennie de Wet, recognized several members who have called the MCSA Jhb their home for decades. In particular, two milestones deserve special mention:
• Oliver Oppler ~ 65 Years of Membership
• Prof. Paul Fatti ~ 60 Year Diamond Jubilee

In addition, Andreas and Kat Draxl received the Chairman’s Award for their exceptional contribution to the Club through their energy and building of adventurous club culture.

With a renewed sense of energy, the new committee was elected, headed up by new Chairman, Brett Pepper.

We look forward to a successful 2026 with our continued commitment to Explore. Discover. Connect. Protect.
