With Pots of Hope just a few months away, we want to give corporates plenty of time to plan for their participation in our 10th anniversary event. To mark this milestone, and to support Doorway to Dignityโ€™s long-term sustainability, weโ€™ll be doing things a little differently this year: weโ€™re introducing a R600 entry fee per corporate team. Beyond the competition, it's a great opportunity for team bonding over an open fire, good food, and good company โ€” all in service of a cause worth supporting.

Your entry fee goes directly towards making the event possible, and on the day, your team will be part of something that matters. Food and refreshments will also be on sale, with proceeds supporting our work with vulnerable communities. Not part of a corporate team? Individual entries are open at R300.

To book your slot, please contact Trevor on 062 752 7403.

Pots of Hope is Doorway to Dignity's signature annual event, held on World Homeless Day to raise awareness of homelessness and food insecurity. Now in its tenth year, it brings together organisations and individuals to show love and compassion to people who struggle daily to survive, while connecting participants from all walks of life.

The event comprises three elements: a potjiekos competition, a pop-up restaurant, and food distribution to vulnerable communities. Entries are judged by a panel of professional chefs and trophies and prizes are awarded to the top three. The pop-up restaurant serves around 80 homeless and vulnerable individuals, who are attended by servers and order from a menu, just as they would in a regular restaurant โ€“ with potjie meals, dessert, and cold drinks on offer. Remaining competition meals are distributed to pre-selected beneficiaries.

Over the past couple of weeks, weโ€™ve received welcome donations to provide much-needed relief over the chilly months. A warm thank you to Fourways Main Reef Rotary Club for 83 blankets and Scubaversity Diveclub for blankets and an assortment of winter clothes, as well as to an anonymous corporate donor for a further 100 blankets โ€“ nearly 200 blankets in all.

These generous donations are being distributed to various beneficiaries, including The Lighthouse Baby Shelter, Nursing Care House of Grace, Johannesburg Bible College, a pre-school in Thulamntwana near Orange Farm, and a childrenโ€™s home in Limpopo.

We are beyond grateful for your kindness. Together, you are making winter bearable for those who need it most.

This year, Doorway to Dignity celebrates its 10th anniversary. Over the years we have had the privilege of working alongside many like-minded businesses, non-profits, and individuals, striving to achieve a common goal โ€“ to restore dignity to homeless and vulnerable people, renewing their hope and reaffirming their sense of worth.

None of this happens alone; real, lasting change takes a network โ€“ people and organisations united around a common purpose, sharing resources and reach rather than working in isolation. That collective effort is what has carried us through the past decade, and what will carry us into the next.

We have exciting plans in store to mark this milestone, the most notable being our annual Pots of Hope event โ€“ taking place on the 10th day of the 10th month, the perfect date for a 10th anniversary. This year, weโ€™ll be changing things up: a bigger event, a different format, and quite possibly a few new faces among our beneficiaries. Please drop us a line if you'd like to find out how you can get involved.

To everyone who has been part of our journey until now โ€“ whether offering professional or financial support, volunteering, or donating food, clothing, and other items โ€“ thank you. Weโ€™re looking forward to working alongside you over the next 10 years.

Food insecurity remains one of South Africa's most urgent crises. Around 63% of South African households face food insecurity, and up to 15 million people do not have enough to eat every day. The figures behind that number are stark: Statistics SA data shows that 19.7% of households experience moderate to severe food insecurity, while 8% face severe food insecurity โ€“ figures that have climbed steadily since 2019. Children bear the heaviest burden, with nearly 29% of children under five suffering from stunting due to chronic undernutrition. And in households where a young child is stunted, the rate of food insecurity rises to over 83%.

The Jars of Hope initiative offers a simple yet powerful response: each jar, filled with rice, lentils, soup mix, soup powder, and a stock cube, carries a 98% nutritional rating, based on research by the Food and Evolution Research Laboratory (FERL) at the University of Johannesburg. Each jar can feed a family of four adults โ€“ or as many as six people if the family includes children.

Every year for the past five years, Maliska Van Rensburg and her remarkable team at Compassionate Hands have donated Jars of Hope to Doorway to Dignity. Today, we received 625 jars from this generous and caring group of people โ€“ and the numbers speak for themselves: today's donation alone will provide between 2 500 and 3 750 meals. Over five years, this charity has donated a total of 2 189 jars โ€“ a 160% increase since 2022 โ€“ equating to at least 8 750 meals for those who need them most.

To everyone at Compassionate Hands: from the bottom of our hearts, thank you. Your kindness, year after year, is a lifeline for the families we serve.
