Today I spoke with Peter Ndoro on the Channel Africa podcast, where we discussed Africa Border Day, a day established by the African Union to reflect on regional integration, cross-border cooperation, and the need to dismantle colonial-era barriers that have long divided the continent.

In this interview, we discussed the future of African regional integration, the importance of stronger and more functional African states, people-to-people relations, intra-African trade, and shared prosperity across the continent. It was a powerful reminder of why cooperation, unity, and development remain so important for Africa’s future. Kamuzu Day 2026. Recalling the purpose of our Independence.

Today, as many Malawians continue to suffer in poverty, Kamuzu Day must remind each one of us that we have a responsibility to do all we can to achieve the purpose of our independence - better material conditions in the life of every Malawian. Most importantly, anyone who claim leadership must be challenged to show that they are capable of and working to achieve the purpose of our independence.

14th April 2026. Washington DC, United States. This week I am in Washington for the 2026 IMF- Spring Meeting. The first engagement on the sidelines of the meetings was convened on the topic - Beyond Financial Indicators: The Narrative Premium in African Credit Risk. The meeting examined the quantitative and qualitative aspects that drive narratives about the creditworthiness of African countries. Challenging the predominant prejudices and negativity that have characterised Africa’s potential.
These conversations ultimately benefit countries such as Malawi by improving credit ratings and lowering the cost of borrowing from global capital markets

15th - 18th February 2026. Addis Ababa. Ethiopia.
On the margins of the AU Summit, we held bilateral meetings with the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf; H.E. Sidi Ould Tah, President of the African Development Bank Group; Dr. George Elombi, President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Afreximbank; and Hon. Dhananjay Ramful, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade of Mauritius. Our discussions focused on the establishment of the Africa Credit Rating Agency (AfCRA) and its critical role in strengthening Africa’s financial architecture and amplifying the continent’s voice within global credit rating systems.
Malawi like other African countries stands to benefit from improved ratings as the cost of borrowing drops and more and better financing is available from the domestic capital markets that will grow once all Africa sovereigns (countries) and corporations receive ratings from AfCRA.
As the 2026 IMF report indicates Malawi is in debt distress and our debt to GDP ratio (90%+) is above the target set by SADC.
