Hi to everyone,
It has been an extremely tough week for baboons over SA, with baboons being killed or injured in many areas.
The plight of Tabitha of the Slangkop captured our hearts as the adult baboon was found in dreadful pain, foaming and dying a slow, agonising death after having being shot by pellet(s).
On examination, and through x-rays, it was discovered that Tabitha had 4 pellets in her.
Tabitha was humanely euthanised and there is now a huge call for the perpetrator to be brought to book and rightly so as there are just too many pellet injuries and deaths; think of poor Mazoe last year who suffered a similar painful death - at the hands of the same person?
I thank Susan Proctor Hume who led the action to create a reward to get information leading to the prosecution of the Kommetjie shooter; she and many others have now raised over R35000 for a reward, what fantastic news!
Lets hope we get clear evidence and that the despicable person is prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
The case of Tabitha has highlighted what so many baboons go through daily and the extreme plight of vervets in KZN who are frequently killed as a result of pellets.
Monkey Helpline launched a petition last year calling for - The ban of unconditional private ownership of airguns in SA.
So far 7 683 people have signed - we need to really show solidarity and get the numbers up to ban pellet guns.
Please can everyone support this petition!
The heart of this problem and reason Tabitha, Mazoe and so many other animals suffer slow painful deaths, is the uncontrolled and easy access to airguns - this must end!
