Amahlathi Hosts First IDP Representative Forum Meeting for 2026/27 Financial Year

Amahlathi Local Municipality today hosted its first IDP Representative Forum Meeting for the 2026/27 financial year at the Mzwandile Fanti Recreational Hall in Stutterheim.

The meeting was chaired by the Municipal Manager, Dr Zamuxolo Shasha, and focused on the Fourth Quarter Performance Report, progress on project implementation, key challenges encountered and remedial actions being undertaken.

The presentation provided stakeholders with an overview of the Municipality’s performance and progress in implementing programmes and projects aimed at improving service delivery. Community representatives actively engaged with the presentation, raising questions, providing input and seeking clarity on matters affecting their communities.

The IDP Representative Forum remains an important platform for strengthening community participation, accountability and meaningful stakeholder engagement in the municipal planning and development process.

In major a bid to overhaul infrastructure and revive the economic heartbeat of the town, the Amahlathi Local Municipality Mayor Cllr Nomakosazana Nongqayi has officially handed over a R28 million multi-year road rehabilitation project to appointed contractor for the Stutterheim town.

Addressing the community members,Local business owners and SMMES, the Mayor outlined a bold infrastructure strategy aimed at restoring town roads,boosting ratepayer confidence and fostering economic growth.
“ Our rate-paying residents in town keep municipal services running. If we neglect the town centre where business happens, everyone suffers. By allocating 60% of our infrastructure budget to town revival and 40 % to rural villages, we protect our revenue base while driving rural development." Mayor Cllr Nongqayi emphasised.

The contractor handover forms part of a broader infrastructure push funded primarily through national grants and strategic reallocation.
R 28 million town roads project, the flagship initiative covers major roads upgrade and resurfacing across critical arterial and essential access routes.

The Mayor delivered a firm message to the appointed contractor and the municipal engineering oversight team regarding accountability, quality delivery, value for money and local economic development.Main contractors are expected to actively mentor local sub -contractors, laborers and assist local Small, Medium and Micro Enterprise (SMMEs)upgrade their Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) grading from grade 1 upwards.

The project will create job opportunities, direct employment for 10 general workers and 3 security guards during the construction process.

The multi year project will span across the current and upcoming financial years to ensure comprehensive , long term construction without compromising quality.
