NEW SOLAR POWERED TECHNO-LAB AT RATSHEPO
Rectron has officially launched its eighth Technolab in South Africa at Ratshepo Secondary School, bringing digital learning infrastructure to more than 300 learners in the community.
The R500,000 facility was officially handed over on Thursday as part of Rectron’s Progressive Educational Upliftment programme, which focuses on improving access to technology and STEM education in under-resourced schools.
The newly established Technolab is equipped with 40 laptops, an interactive whiteboard, projector, printer and scanner, as well as a two-year WiFi and data bundle aimed at supporting digital learning and research activities.
To ensure uninterrupted operations during load shedding, the lab also includes a solar and EcoFlow battery backup system.
According to Rectron, the initiative is intended to bridge the digital divide in peri-urban and disadvantaged communities by giving learners practical exposure to technology, coding and digital literacy skills aligned with the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
For many learners at Ratshepo Secondary, the facility represents their first direct access to computers and digital learning tools. Teachers will also receive training on integrating technology into subjects such as Mathematics, Science and Computer Applications Technology (CAT).
Beyond school hours, the Technolab is expected to serve as a community digital literacy centre, expanding access to online learning and basic computer skills for residents in the surrounding area.
The handover marks Rectron’s eighth Technolab rollout nationally as the company continues expanding its educational technology programme across South Africa.
The event featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony, demonstrations by learners using laptops for the first time, and a showcase of the lab’s solar-powered backup system.
Education stakeholders say the long-term success of the initiative will likely be measured through improved digital literacy, stronger STEM participation and future matric performance at the school.
