A gang of suspected poachers were caught red-handed in the Coega Industrial Development Zone on Monday after a consultant spotted them loading the carcass of a kudu into their car.

While doing a site inspection I came accross fresh tracks, being alone and trying to identify the suspects with photographs I decided to set up a camera hide. However some monkeys saw me and started chatering with alarm calls. Realizing the monkeys would give away my position, I decided to move and use visual tracking to follow the suspects. I heard them approaching and saw they were carrying bags on their shoulders which means EVIDENCE. As they walked past me I stalked right up to one of them and grabbed him before he knew I was there. I mainly wanted to get clear pictures of their faces knowing that's it's difficult and dangerous to take on two suspects. They ran themselves tired and I was able to arrest one suspect on the spot. We persevered the crime scene, SAPS stocktheft was notified and forensics processed the crime scene adding evidence to the case. The second suspect was arrested a week later and both are being charged with stocktheft. This is one example of the types of scenarios that we face regularly.

Just a little bit of perspective before we hit the range. We are testing our equipment from rifles to camera and having some fun while we are at it. We will be posting the shooting videos in due course , this is just a brief explanation as to why we have to train for the worst case scenario.

Today is World Ranger Day.

A day to recognise the men and women who stand between wildlife and the people trying to destroy it.

This clip is from our Eastern Cape Ranger Day, where we brought together anti-poaching units, rangers, partners, and our international expedition participants for a day of training, first aid, drones, self-defence, and shared field experience.

SANParks and Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency were present, the South African Red Cross in Port Elizabeth provided first aid certification, and Desai’s Drone Centre showed how drones can support anti-poaching operations and wildlife protection. Thank you also to TacTrac for bringing your expertise.

Not everyone you see in this video is going to be out on patrol arresting suspects. That is not the point. Everyone has a role to play. Some are rangers. Some work as support staff. Some bring technology. Some bring funding, logistics, media, or simply the willingness to stand behind the people doing the hard work.

Wildlife crime is not solved by one person or one unit. We are stronger together.

Rangers face danger every day. Armed poachers, dangerous animals, remote terrain, long hours, limited resources, and the pressure of protecting what cannot protect itself.

The 2026 Roll of Honour tragically recognises 147 rangers who lost their lives between 1 June 2025 and 31 May 2026.

Today we remember them.

And tomorrow we keep working.

My introduction into Anti poaching was intense.. surrounded by so many shootings and stabbings that I learned how not to do things.

Before every arrest comes the deep understanding that the Sh is about to hit the fan and sometimes the most unlikely suspect resists the most.. you just never know what to expect.

Being cool calm and collected can be difficult when adrenaline is pumping and blades are flashing never mind the constant risk of fi****ms. This is when years and years of experience really pays off being able to instinctively adapt and de escalate the situation when everyone else would be going for their guns. Closing the gap and taking the suspect to the ground while he is still in shock, talk is cheap the risks are real and we do this a lot.

Being a Ranger to me is a Sacrifice, we put ourselves out there in the name of the greater good but when things go wrong, we are on our own standing up for what we believe in.



Makes me reflect on all the bad stuff , the sacrifice, the hardships, the suicides and the thanklessness of it all but in the end we can only learn from our mistakes and strive to always improve, never give up and not lose sight of the humanity element because people are struggling and we as rangers sometimes get caught up in the middle of it.

Slowly but surely the Hunter becomes the hunted..

Building a case takes time, a premature arrest with a lack of evidence ruins the element of surprise and educates the poacher.

TacTrac Anti-poaching Academy we put in the groundwork to do everything possible to ensure a successful prosecution.

Way too many people don't understand how the law works and this has been working in the poachers favour for too long.

We take it upon ourselves as our duty to conservation to do it right, in the name of justice we will have our day in court.
