Some moments remind us why we do what we do. ❤️

Long after an emergency call has ended, it is not only the medical care that people remember—it is the calm voice, the reassuring presence, the dignity shown and the compassion offered during one of life’s most difficult moments.

Louis and Mphume recently received a heartfelt message and thoughtful gifts from the family of Gillian Stevens, thanking them for the professional and supportive care they provided.

To the Stevens family: thank you for taking the time to recognise our team. Your words mean more than you may ever know.

To Louis and Mphume: this is the heart of UEMS. Your work may happen in a moment, but the kindness you show can remain with a family forever.

Not every hero wears a cape. Some arrive in uniform, ready to care. 🚑❤️

🚑 Community Incident Report – Farm Injury

On 27 August 2026, UEMS responded to a local farm after an employee’s leg became trapped in a farm implement.

The employee had been freed by colleagues and first aiders before our arrival but had sustained a serious open wound with profuse bleeding. Our team swiftly controlled the bleeding, stabilised the patient and transported them to a trauma facility for further investigation and treatment.

We commend the bystanders and first aiders whose quick actions assisted the patient before emergency crews arrived.

🩹 If someone is bleeding severely:

📞 Call UEMS immediately: 079 976 9056
✋ Apply firm, continuous pressure with a clean cloth or dressing.
🩸 If blood soaks through, add more dressings without removing the first layer.
🚫 Do not remove objects embedded in the wound.
🧭 Keep the patient calm and still until professional help arrives.

Swift response. Professional care. Here when our community needs us.

🕊️ Garden Castle Incident
On 26 August 2026, Underberg Emergency Medical Services (UEMS), together with various role players, responded to an emergency at Garden Castle where a group of young hikers were enjoying the trails.

During the hike, one of the young boys collapsed. A bystander immediately initiated CPR while emergency services were called. Our Advanced Life Support team responded swiftly and made their way up the hiking trail to reach the patient.

Despite all efforts by the bystander and emergency crews, the young boy was sadly declared deceased on scene.

🏔️ A SAFE ENDING IN GARDEN CASTLE 🙌🏽

Yesterday, a search was underway in the Garden Castle area after a male hiker had been reported missing since approximately 4PM the previous afternoon.

Mountain Rescue teams searched throughout the night, with a helicopter deployed to assist.

Thankfully, the search ended with the news everyone had been hoping for — the hiker was found safe, awake and alert. 🙏🏼

Once he was safely out, UEMS was there to check him over.

This positive outcome is also an important reminder of just how quickly a day in the mountains can turn into an emergency.

If you’re heading into the Drakensberg:
🥾 Never hike alone
🧥 Carry warm and weatherproof clothing
💧 Take sufficient food and water
📍 Let someone know your route and expected return time
📱 Carry a charged phone and emergency communication where possible
🌦️ Be prepared for sudden weather changes

We’re incredibly grateful this story had a safe ending. 💚
