𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡, 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞: 𝐌𝐚𝐲𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧’𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔

Today, our community came together for an unforgettable Mayoral Women’s Day, hosted with immense warmth and vision by the Executive Mayor of the ZF Mgcawu District Municipality, Cllr Maryna Basson. The atmosphere was charged with inspiration, hope and an unbreakable sense of sisterhood. The day’s program moved hearts and uplifted spirits across every generation.

Compassionate religious speakers opened the day with powerful prayers of blessing, hope and resilience. Dynamic motivational speakers reminded every woman in attendance of her innate power, potential and worth.

The programme also created space for an important conversation around Gender-Based Violence. GBV activists shared powerful messages about speaking out against abuse, supporting those affected by violence and protecting our communities and fostering safe spaces for all. Local entertainment brought joy, laughter and a lively atmosphere to the day, giving everyone an opportunity to relax, connect and enjoy the celebration together.

In her moving keynote address, the Executive Mayor Cllr Maryna Basson shared a deep, heartfelt message on what it truly means to be a strong woman in today’s world. She reminded us that true strength does not mean standing alone, it means reaching out, holding hands and uplifting one another. When women support women, entire communities thrive.

Today, the Deputy Minister of Electricity and Energy, Ms Samantha Graham-Maré officially launched the first-ever District Energy Council in Upington. During this historic, first-of-its-kind initiative, the Deputy Minister was joined by the Executive Mayor and Speaker of the ZF Mgcawu District Municipality, the Executive Mayor of the Dawid Kruiper Municipality and the Mayors of Kgatelopele, Tsantsabane, !Kheis and Kai !Garib Municipalities.

The District Energy Council will strengthen cooperation between government, municipalities, Eskom, businesses, the agricultural sector and communities to improve energy planning and ensure that energy-related matters receive the attention they deserve.

Mayors across the district welcomed the initiative and pledged their support, highlighting the importance of working together to improve access to energy and create sustainable solutions for our communities.

𝐃𝐄𝐏𝐔𝐓𝐘 𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐁𝐄𝐑𝐍𝐈𝐂𝐄 𝐒𝐖𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐒 𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐒 𝐃𝐄𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐅𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐃𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇𝐓 𝐃𝐀𝐘 𝐈𝐌𝐁𝐈𝐙𝐎 𝐈𝐍 𝐑𝐈𝐄𝐓𝐅𝐎𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐈𝐍

Today, the Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Bernice Swarts, led the Desertification and Drought Day Ministerial Imbizo in Rietfontein.
During the event, the Deputy Minister handed over two boreholes to drought-affected communities, helping to improve access to water. The project will also create opportunities for 84 young people through invasive plant clearing programmes.

The Imbizo served as an important platform for engagement between government and communities on environmental challenges facing drought-prone areas, including desertification, water scarcity and climate resilience.

In her closing remarks, Deputy Minister Swarts reaffirmed the government's commitment to supporting vulnerable communities and safeguarding natural resources, stating that, "𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲."
