EFF Member of Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature, Hon Jackson Malatjie delivered a debate on Workers Day. 07/05/2026 where he also touched on the issue of 247 security guards who recently lost their jobs in Nkomazi Local Municipality.

He had this to say:

—We can never remain silent while 247 security guards in Nkomazi Local Municipality are retrenched overnight, not because their work is no longer needed, but because a tender has been handed to a service provider whose only qualification is proximity to political connections and profit motives. This is exploitation at its best.

About 1400 and 5000 workers were pushed out and replaced by contractors at Seriti Mine. These are fathers and mothers who dedicated their lives to dangerous and essential work, only to be discarded like trash.

EFF NKOMAZI SUBREGION CONDEMNS NKOMAZI LOCAL MUNICIPALITY OVER RETRENCHMENT OF
247 SECURITY GUARDS.

- The EFF leadership in Nkomazi led a delegation of workers to a meeting with municipal management, led by the Municipal Manager, to raise concerns over the retrenchment of workers without following the procedures outlined in Section 189 of the Labour Relations Act. The Act requires employers to consult workers, provide
reasons for retrenchment, consider alternatives and apply fair selection criteria.

- During the meeting, it was established that workers were not informed about the possibility of retrenchment and that no fair selection process was followed. Instead, the newly appointed companies namely, Abaphumeleli Trading PSP, Makhungu Security Service and Phepha Securities allegedly handpicked who would remain employed and who would lose their jobs.

The leadership of the EFF in Nkomazi Subregion led a delegation of Nkomazi Local Municipality Security Guards into a meeting with the Municipal Management led by the Municipal Manager to discuss the recent retrenchment of 247 Security Guards, which will leave 247 families in deep poverty.

This meeting is an initiative in an effort to get the security guards back to work as opposed to have them replaced by electronic devices( Cameras and Alarms).
