NORTHERN CAPE MARKS WORLD BOOK DAY 2026 AS PART OF FREEDOM MONTH CELEBRATIONS

The Northern Cape Department of Sport, Arts and Culture will commemorate World Book Day on the 23 April 2026 as part of the broader Freedom Month programme , highlighting the important connection between freedom and the ability to read, write, and access information.

Celebrated under the theme “Reading for Pleasure,” this year’s programme emphasises reading as both a fundamental right and a meaningful expression of freedom. Within the context of Freedom Month, the initiative underscores that access to books, libraries, and knowledge resources remains central to building an informed, empowered, and active citizenry.

Through this commemoration, the Department aims to promote a culture of reading and writing, encourage ownership of books, and inspire communities, particularly young people to make use of public libraries as safe and inclusive spaces for learning and creativity. The programme will also celebrate authors and storytelling as vital tools for preserving heritage, fostering social cohesion, and strengthening nation-building.

World Book Day 2026 will be observed across all five districts of the Northern Cape through a range of activities, including reading sessions, storytelling, and community engagements.

These will take place as forth

23 April 2026 Vredevallei Town Hall in Riemvasmaak within the ZF Mgcawu District;
23 April 2026 Gamagara Community Hall in Kathu within the John Taolo Gaetsewe District;

National Library Week 2026
With the theme " Reclaming Knowledge, Empowering Futures", in Magareng we celebrate libraries this week. Today we targeted teens particularly in schools where our mobile libraries are located. Our focus was based on marketing digital libraries. Our libraries offer communities with online services like e-books and data vouchers for some time now. These kind of services are not well known to the communities we serve. Today; we reclaimed the importance of libraries and we empowered "Ama 2k" with the 4th industrial revolution (4IR) resources available in our libraries
