On 30 May 2026, SASCO Lejweleputswa Region successfully conducted an online voter registration campaign at student accommodations around CUT Welkom, reaffirming its commitment to building an active, conscious, and politically engaged student community.

The campaign was joined by the ANC NEC Deployee to the Free State, Cde Zuko Godlimpi, the Deputy President of the ANCYL, Cde Zusiphe Francisco Dyantyi, and the ANCYL Provincial Chairperson, Cde Junior Lehlehla. Also in attendance were SASCO NWC Member Cde Kate Mpuru, SASCO Free State Chairperson Cde Mpho Mndaweni, Provincial Media Liaison Officer Cde Gomolemo Raqashile, Regional Coordinator Cde Mamello Masoleng, RTT Member Cde Donald Mthandeni, the Lejweleputswa Election Team, and members of the SASCO Kgomoco Mogoere(CUT Welkom).

For the Lejweleputswa Region, this initiative was important in ensuring that students are not only registered to vote but are also empowered to participate meaningfully in decisions that affect their education, communities, and future. The engagements provided an opportunity to listen to students, address concerns raised at accommodation level, and strengthen SASCO’s organisational presence among students.

As SASCO Lejweleputswa, we remain committed to taking the organisation to where students are, building strong branches, and ensuring that the student voice remains at the centre of the struggle for quality, accessible, and transformed education.

On the 30th of May, SASCO Lejweleputswa RTT will be on the ground engaging students and rolling out voter registration programmes across various student accommodations hosting students of the Central University of Technology.

Student engagement is vital in building political consciousness and ensuring that young people understand the power they hold in shaping policies that affect education, development and their future. Voter registration is a critical step in strengthening the voice of students and young people in democratic processes.

Through these programmes, SASCO continues to organise, educate and mobilise students to take ownership of their future and contribute meaningfully towards social and political transformation.

The South African Students Congress (SASCO) strongly condemns the repeated robbery incidents that continue to terrorise students residing at Kalachane Student Accommodation. It is unacceptable that students are living under constant fear in a place that is supposed to provide safety, dignity and a conducive environment for learning.

What is deeply concerning is that these criminal incidents are not happening for the first time.
Students have continuously been exposed to danger, yet there has been little to no decisive intervention from those entrusted with their safety. The continued failure to adequately protect students reflects gross negligence and a serious disregard for student welfare.

As SASCO, we call upon the management of the Central University of Technology to immediately hold the management of Kalachane accountable for their failure to safeguard students. We are disturbed by reports that no criminal case was opened against the suspects involved in these robberies. Such conduct raises serious questions about the commitment of the accommodation management to ensuring justice and safety for students.

Furthermore, the poorly monitored entrance and exit points at the residence have made it easier for criminals to access the premises and target students. This level of security failure is unacceptable and cannot continue.

We also call on the management of Kalachane to act decisively against the security guards who were on duty during these incidents. Their conduct and failure to protect students raises a concern about possible negligance and accountability. As such their conduct warrants a full investigation into whether there was any negligance or any form of complicity.

Student accommodation facilities are meant to be homes away from home, not robbery hotspots where students are traumatised and exposed to crime on a daily basis. At a time when students should be focusing on preparing for examinations, they are instead forced to live in fear and uncertainty.

We further urge all student accommodation providers to urgently tighten and strengthen their security measures, particularly during the winter season when darkness falls earlier and criminals take advantage of vulnerable situations.

In addition, SASCO calls upon all student accommodations to work closely with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to ensure regular patrols around student residences. The safety and wellbeing of students must be prioritised at all times.

We will not remain silent while students are subjected to unsafe living conditions. Those responsible must be held accountable and immediate action must be taken to restore safety and confidence within student accommodation facilities.

The attendance was to strengthen the alliance, SASCO Lejweleputswa reaffirms its unwavering support to the African National Congress. The future of our communities and campuses depends on unity and action.

RE: OUTCOMES OF THE ANC LEJWELEPUTSWA REGIONAL CONFERENCE

The South African Students Congress (SASCO) Lejweleputswa Regional Task Team extends its revolutionary congratulations to the newly elected Regional Executive Committee of the African
National Congress (ANC) in Lejweleputswa, led by Regional Chairperson Comrade Xolile Toki and Regional Secretary Comrade Irvin Riet, who have been re-elected to lead the region for a second
consecutive term.

As SASCO Lejweleputswa, we wish the newly elected Regional Executive Committee a successful and progressive term of office. We are confident that under their leadership, the Lejweleputswa region will continue to grow and become a better place for all communities through improved service delivery, accountable leadership and a commitment to championing the needs and aspirations of the people.

This conference was held during one of the most historic and symbolic periods in the democratic calendar of South Africa - Freedom Day, commemorated annually on the 27th of April. Freedom Day marks the anniversary of South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994, where millions of South Africans voted freely for the first time regardless of race, gender or background. It remains a day that reminds us of the sacrifices made by countless freedom fighters and liberation movements in
pursuit of democracy, equality and justice.

The African National Congress, founded in 1912, has historically been at the forefront of the struggle against apartheid and colonial oppression. Through decades of resistance, mobilisation and sacrifice, the ANC became the leading force in securing the democratic South Africa we enjoy today. Hosting this important regional conference during Freedom Day therefore carries significant revolutionary meaning, as it reminds us of the responsibility to defend, deepen and advance the gains of our democracy for future generations.

We further extend our sincere gratitude to the Acting Regional Secretary of the ANCYL, Comrade Tebogo Mokolutlo, together with his collective, for the outstanding work of ensuring the representation of young people within the leadership of the ANC in Lejweleputswa. The election of seven young people into the Regional Executive Committee is a significant victory for youth representation and demonstrates growing confidence in young leaders within the movement. This means that the grievances, challenges, and aspirations of young people and students in the region will now be echoed in the highest decision-making structures of the ANC. This moment represents a turning point for the movement, the Progressive Youth Alliance (PYA) and young people across the region.

We are equally encouraged by the election of former SASCO leaders into the Regional Executive Committee, including former SASCO Lejweleputswa Regional Chairperson Comrade Mokgethi
Setlhalefo and former SASCO Free State Provincial Secretary Comrade Ncamile Makeleni. Their election demonstrates the important contribution SASCO continues to make in producing capable, disciplined and community-driven leaders within the PYA and the broader liberation movement.

As SASCO Lejweleputswa, we trust and hope that this newly elected leadership collective will prioritize the pressing socio-economic challenges facing young people, particularly the high
unemployment rate, access to quality education, student accommodation and financial exclusion. We further hope to see more bursary opportunities and educational support programs being extended to deserving students from disadvantaged communities across the region.

SASCO remains committed to working alongside all progressive forces in building a better Lejweleputswa that prioritize education, youth development, economic opportunities and community advancement.

Forward to the unity and renewal of the ANC.
