Good morning all- as Lowvelder’s know, Winter is our fire season and I’m sure you have seen all the burning that has been happening around town. We are in need of a few volunteers who will be willing to help us out with controlling fires in and around the reserve. Over the last 10 days we have had our small fire team put out 4! We have our own fire fighting equipment but are in need of more people in case we are not available or if the fire is larger than the few of us are able to fight. Please inbox us if you think you may be able to help. Thank you 😊

After all the upset over the TLB moving through reserve land and all the efforts behind preserving this special space while protecting our critically endangered Aloe species, it is incredibly frustrating when you have the local running and cycling club do even more damage to the area than any other previous organisations have before. These are the same people that have their arms up in the air over the potential destruction of this environment but have cut down aloe specimens and destroyed ground to make paths for their own purposes without permission or impact assessment. Not only has ground been irrevocably damaged but a huge injury to the bio site has also been done. As the official NPC for this land- we have not even touched it as we know that there are protocols to be followed which have been blatantly ignored, such behaviour is not only disheartening but entirely unacceptable!!

PLAN FOR VARIOUS DAYS & ACTIVITIES OF WESSA BIOBLITZ:

Wessa Lowveld BioBlitz Challenge 2019
1. WHERE: Lowveld Region, Mpumalanga, South Africa
2. WHEN: 29th November - 1st December
3. THEME: Exploring Nature and Biodiversity of the region
4. PROCESS: Sampling biodiversity and compiling species lists for a range of taxa
5. DATA MANAGEMENT: Rapid Assessments of biodiversity in the region

ACTIVITY PLAN
30 November 2019
5:00 - 24:00
Big Birding Day. Southern Kruger National Park. Team Leader: Rael Loon (084 811 4314)
Beginning at the bridge over Crocodile River at Malelane Gate to spend the day recording as many bird species as possible in the southern Kruger Park. Using Biyamiti Bush Camp (25 16.24S; 31 41.54E) as the central point for the 50km radius, potential recommended sites to visit include Berg-en-dal Camp, Afsaal picnic site, Pretoriouskop, Lower Sabie rest camp and Crocodile Bridge. Participants are encouraged to compile bird lists for the region and to post their sightings on this i-naturalist project. The' birdlasser' app is a user-friendly platform for logging and recording sightings. For additional information on Big Birding Day see this link:
https://www.inaturalist.org/posts/28942-birdlife-sa-big-birding-day-2019

13:00 - 17:00
Lowveld Botanical Gardens.
Spend the afternoon cataloging as many trees and plants as possible at the Lowveld Botanical Garden in Nelspruit. Participants are encouraged to take photos of the trees and plants and to post them on i-naturalist. Most of the trees have labels attached to them and so is a good opportunity for learning the names and identify a of range of trees and plants. There is a restaurant at the gardens and is a good place to spend the afternoon. The Gardens also support a diversity of fauna such as birds, reptiles, spiders and insects. Participants are encouraged to take photos of all of these and to post all of these on this i-naturalist project site.

1 December 2019
Rivers, Fish, Frogs and Insects. Team Leader: Dr. Llew Taylor (0764139566)
8:00: Meet at White River Cricket Club (WRCE) at 8am. We can arrange to drive in fewer vehicles and leave some of them at the club, as well as our stuff for the braai.
8:30: Drive down to confluence of White River with Crocodile River. The GPS coordinates for the site are 25 27.743’S, 31 04.964’E. Site is immediately below a small weir. Accessible reach extends a distance downstream to an old bridge.
9:00 to 11:00: SASS5 and piscine fauna, Amphibia we see in the course of the activity too. Also someone to walk around there and do birding and check for tracks and scats (water mongoose, cape clawless otter, spotted-necked otter), conservation-important plants (eg Aloe simii).
11:00: Drive to site immediately below WRCE fence downstream side. Access either through Uplands or through Coolmore Farm (I will arrange that). GPS coordinates are 25 17.143’S, 31 00.884’E.
11:30 to 13:30: Do same at site as previous site.
13:30 to 15:30: Braai at White River Cricket Club.
15:30: Drive to Swartfontein site above Klipkopje Dam. The GPS coordinates for the site are 25 11.675’S, 30 58.425’E. Site is at a small weir and bridge near Swartfontein Institution.
16:00 to 18:00: Do same at site as previous site.
18:00: Go to frogging site upstream of the SASS5 site (2km).
18:00 to 20:00: Do frogging there. Perhaps we will find the new species. We will need to use an electrofisher there if available. As far as I know the new species is only known in its tadpole stage.
20:00: Finish

The Birdlife-SA Big Birding Day is due to take place on the 30th November. Big Birding Day is an annual national event organized by Birdlife South Africa which raises funds for bird conservation and is a fun way for watching and learning about birds. This year the event coincides with Wessa Lowveld'...

Are you a specialist or highly knowledgable in a specific area of the environment, trees, grasses, invertebrates, birds, amphibians, etc?

Then we need your help! We are looking for team leaders for the 01 December to help with our Lowveld Bioblitz- you can join an already established team or get in touch for more info and start one of your very own.

We are trying to determine the rich biodiversity in White River and surrounds!

There are various sites that will be investigated but White River Nature Reserve is especially interested in sending in a team for amphibians!!

White River Reserve- The heart of our town.

We are a passionate local committee that is working toward reclaiming a protected wetland and nature reserve in White River, Mpumalanga. Our aim is to disrupt any human activity that might destroy or harm this vital piece of land and protect the wetland and surrounding natural habitats. This special veld forms part of the total 17 % percent of the remaining Pretoriouskop Sourveld biome. Our White River namesake passes through this vulnerable space and creates the tributary and wetland area that feeds one of our most important dams, Primkop. This is currently being polluted by external sources like poorly maintained sewage works and water is being lost to invasive plant species like khaki bos. It is in dire need for human intervention to preserve the most precious commodity in the world, clean water.

There is an abundance of flower and grass species as it obviously very much mimics a savannah landscape as well as a huge amount of bird species and other smaller fauna. We have the full intention of rehabilitating the wildlife that would have once occurred in such a habitat and have already made strides in having said wildlife donated which will be introduced once the area is fenced in.

There is also an endemic aloe (Aloe simii) species that occurs within the 21.4 hectares of the protected area that has not been found anywhere else in the world. This pant is critically endangered and needs our help to survive as it will not thrive outside of this unique habitat and is at risk of becoming extinct in the near future is something is not done to prevent this. We are working at fencing the area in and rebuilding the dam wall, which formed part of an old bird hide, as well as clearing out invasive species that have crept in over the years, Working for Water and Working for Fire are both on board with being involved in this mammoth task as we move forward.

As White River Nature Reserve is very centrally located in our little town it would be hugely beneficial to the immediate natural environment but also to the social, economic and ecological environment. Benefits in mental health, water health and to the air we breathe in would be incalculable.
