We finally managed to get photos of our latest addition to our giraffe herd. This little guy has been hiding off the beaten track ever since he was spotted a few weeks back from the viewpoint. Welcome to the Timbila family little one.

Feeding the animals in a general area every once in a while gives us the chance to look at the condition of these animals. It also makes for some great photography.

Another leopard kill was found over the weekend. A camera trap was placed at the spot to see if our spotted friend would return, but instead we captured photos of these majestic birds, Verreaux Eagles, formerly known as black eagles, including a gorgeous juvenile of the species.

Nyala is probably one of the most regularly seen of the Timbila game. Though originally from further North (in SA naturally found in KZN, Mpumalanga and Limpopo), these animals thrive in the riverine thicket (thick bush around the rivers) along the Groot River. Nyala camp is named after this beautiful antelope and is found within the same riverine thickets these animals prefer.

For the last 3 days (including today) we had student volunteers from Nelson Mandela University's (NMU) Nature Conservation and Game Ranch Management classes assisting us in a transect game count. Thank you to each and everyone of you for giving up your holiday time to volunteer!
Game counts are vital for any game farm and nature reserve as it can give a more educated estimate of game numbers, show trends in populations, as well as an idea of age and s*x ratio. An added bonus of transect counts is getting access to areas not always seen from roads.
To ensure the students did not get lost, hazard tape was placed as markers in areas where the path crosses rivers and roads, but these will be removed as soon as the last count is done.
