Today marked a significant milestone for the women of Tachimbwa Chansa Womenโ€™s Club in Nchanga Ward as they shared out proceeds from their revolving fund, with members receiving amounts ranging from K2,500 to K6,000. The 32-member group received a K15,000 grant under the 2025 CDF allocation, which they used as a revolving fund and grew to an impressive K174,400 through collective effort, discipline and reinvestment.

Speaking during the occasion, Chingola Municipal Council Town Clerk Mrs Namukolo Kalufyanya, represented by Chief Community Development Officer Ms Victoria Sakala, commended the women for demonstrating how village banking can promote financial independence, unity and community growth. She said the achievement was clear evidence that โ€œCDF is not a rumour,โ€ but a game changer when responsibly utilized.

Mrs Kalufyanya encouraged the women to use their shares wisely by reinvesting in their businesses and exploring other income-generating activities, while maintaining financial discipline, transparency and proper record keeping. She described the group as a shining example for other groups seeking to benefit from CDF empowerment support.

Meanwhile, Nchanga Ward Councillor Mr Jones Siluyele expressed delight at the achievement, noting that the occasion was not only a success for the club but also a success story for the Council. He said Nchanga Ward was among the best-performing wards in terms of CDF grant beneficiaries, with community groups demonstrating tangible results through the prudent utilisation of the funds.

The achievement by Tachimbwa Chansa Womenโ€™s Club provides a practical example of how a modest Government investment can be multiplied through collective responsibility, discipline and determination, creating opportunities for women to improve their livelihoods, strengthen household incomes and financial well being.

A team of researchers from the National Aquaculture Research and Development Centre (NARDC), under the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock today visited Chingola to assess the suitability of Mimbula and Mushishima dams for fish production and possible restocking.

The assessment, conducted in collaboration with the Chingola Veterinary Department focused on water quality and the general condition of the two dams.

The team collected and tested water samples to determine whether the water meets recommended parameters for fish survival and growth. They also assessed the damsโ€™ physical structures and obtained geographical coordinates to map the water bodies and establish their capacity, including the appropriate number of fish fingerlings they can support.

Once the laboratory results confirm that the water quality meets the required standards, the dams will be considered for restocking with fish fingerlings to promote sustainable fish production.

The Center, based at Mwekera in Kitwe, has conducted the exercise across Copperbelt Province covering Chililabombwe, Ndola, Lufwanyama, Mpongwe, Masaiti, Luanshya and Mufulira districts, with a view to help increase local fish production, improve access to fish for surrounding communities and contribute to food and nutrition security.

Copperbelt Permanent Secretary Mr. Lawrence Mwanza has called for scientific knowledge to be translated into practical action to protect communities from environmental health risks.

Mr Mwanza said scientific knowledge should not remain confined to laboratories, offices and technical reports, but must be applied at household, institutional and community levels.

He said this in a speech delivered on his behalf by Deputy Copperbelt Permanent Secretary Mr. Daniel Kamenga during the commemoration of the 2026 World Environmental Health Day in Luanshya, held under the theme, โ€œStanding with Science to Protect Communities.โ€

Mr Mwanza said credible scientific evidence and reliable data should guide environmental health planning, inspections, disease prevention programmes, environmental monitoring and public health interventions.

He noted that the Copperbeltโ€™s growing population, urbanisation, mining and industrial activities continue to present environmental health challenges, including solid waste management, sanitation, food safety, water quality and pollution.

Mr Mwanza called for strengthened collaboration among government institutions, local authorities, environmental institutions, the private sector, traditional leaders, cooperating partners and communities to address these challenges.

Meanwhile, Zambia Environmental Health Institute Vice Treasurer Mr. Mphande Waliko, who represented the Institute President, called for renewed commitment to the environmental health profession.

Mr Waliko emphasised the importance of dedication and collective action in protecting communities, urging environmental health practitioners to continue applying their knowledge and expertise to practical interventions in sanitation, food safety, waste management and disease prevention.

The commemoration highlighted the shared responsibility of government, environmental health practitioners and communities in creating safe and healthy environments.
