POLICE PUBLIC COMPLAINTS COMMISSION PPCC CALLS ON CHIPATA CITY COUNCIL.

The Police Public Complaints Commission has paid a courtesy call on Chipata City Council as part of its familiarisation tour.

The delegation, led by Commission Chairperson Mr Zunga Siakalima, is in Chipata to familiarise itself with stakeholders and engage the Council on workable areas of collaboration, especially in publicising the Commission’s mandate and ensuring that members of the public are aware of the channels available for lodging complaints concerning police operations.

Acting on behalf of the Town Clerk, Chipata City Council Director of City Planning, Mr Joseph Zulu, commended the Commission for the visit, noting that the ongoing decentralisation of public services makes collaboration between institutions key in ensuring that members of the public are well informed about the Commission’s mandate.

Mr Zulu said the Council could play a role in facilitating access to the Commission by allowing members of the public to submit complaints relating to police operations through the Council's complaint section on the website, which could then be forwarded to the Commission .

He further called for capacity building for relevant Council offices and personnel to ensure that dedicated attention is given to complaints received on behalf of the Commission.

The Commission delegation proposed that the Council consider involving the Commission in Full Council meetings as a way of strengthening collaboration.

The Commission said such engagements would provide an opportunity for its officials to familiarise themselves with civic leaders and explain its mandate, which the civic leaders could then communicate to residents in their respective wards.
