CHOMA RECORDS FIVE SUSPECTED ILLICIT ALCOHOL-RELATED DEATHS
Choma, May 15, 2026.
Five people have died in Zambia Compound in Choma District in suspected cases linked to the consumption of illicit locally brewed alcohol commonly known as kachasu, Gwala, and Chijabu.
The Zambia Police Service has since launched investigations into the sudden and unnatural deaths which occurred between May 13 and May 14, 2026.
According to Southern Province Commanding Officer Moono Namalongo, preliminary investigations indicate that all the deceased persons are believed to have consumed the same locally brewed alcoholic substances before developing severe health complications.
Mr. Namalongo said the incidents were reported to Shampande Police Post at different times on May 14, 2026.
He identified the deceased as 44-year-old Bornface Muchenga of Zambia Compound, originally from Shabambala Village in Kalomo District; 52-year-old John Kwalombota of Zambia Compound, originally from Natemba Village in Kazungula District; 38-year-old Coaster Katowa, originally from Namwala District; 45-year-old Chrispine Muchindu of Choma District; and 44-year-old Michael Mulenga, originally from Mporokoso District.
Mr. Namalongo explained that the victims reportedly complained of symptoms such as body weakness, stomach pains, vomiting, dizziness, bleeding from the mouth, and discharge of white substances from the mouth shortly after consuming the suspected illicit alcohol.
He said some of the victims were rushed to Shampande Clinic before being referred to Choma General Hospital, where they later died while receiving treatment, while another victim was found dead in his house.
The Southern Province Commanding Officer further disclosed that two other male adults who allegedly consumed the same alcohol are currently receiving treatment after being referred to Choma General Hospital from Shampande Clinic. He said the two are in stable condition.
Meanwhile, all five bodies have been deposited in the mortuary at Choma General Hospital awaiting postmortem examinations to establish the exact causes of death.
Police have since intensified investigations and are searching for the suspected brewer of the illicit alcohol, who is believed to have fled the area following the incident.
Mr. Namalongo has warned members of the public against consuming illicit and unregulated alcoholic substances, stating that such drinks may contain dangerous toxic chemicals that pose serious health risks and can lead to death.
He further urged members of the public to purchase alcohol only from lawful and regulated sources and to report illegal brewing activities to the nearest police station.
