RURAL ELECTRIFICATION PLAN TO PRIORITISE INCLUSIVE ENERGY ACCESS

The Rural Electrification Authority (REA) has held a stakeholder consultation meeting to gather input for the development of its 2027–2031 Strategic Plan, with a focus on ensuring that rural electrification projects respond to the actual needs of communities.

During the meeting, it was disclosed that approximately 8.2 million people in rural areas and 1.7 million people in urban areas remain without access to electricity.

Acting Permanent Secretary Ms Beauty Undi-Phiri, in a speech read on her behalf by Assistant Secretary Mr Jordan Mwenya, called for inclusive stakeholder participation in shaping the strategic plan.

She said access to electricity is critical to improving education, healthcare, agriculture, entrepreneurship, industrialisation and livelihoods.

Ms Undi-Phiri also called for active participation in the World Bank-funded Accelerating Sustainable and Clean Energy Access Transformation (ASCENT) sensitisation programme.

She said the success of rural electrification depends on communities, traditional leaders, local authorities, government institutions and other stakeholders working together to ensure sustainable and inclusive access to electricity.

Meanwhile, REA Senior Community Development Officer Vijue Moonga said the Authority wants stakeholders to identify weaknesses and highlight priority areas that should be addressed in the new strategic plan.

Tourism Ministry seeks investors for Kasaba Bay, northern circuit

THE Ministry of Tourism has called on citizens and investors to take advantage of investment opportunities at Kasaba Bay and other tourist attractions in Zambia’s northern Province.

Kasaba Bay is a scenic lakeside destination situated on the shores of Lake Tanganyika in Nsumbu National Park of Northern Province.

The destination is known for its beaches, clear waters and wildlife while also carrying historical significance as a former retreat of the country's founding president, Kenneth Kaunda.

The Ministry says Kasaba Bay has significant potential for tourism investment and is seeking an anchor investor to help unlock the area’s potential.

Addressing the media in Kasama yesterday, Tourism director Dr Andrew Chilufya said there was need for more investment in Kasaba Bay and other attractions in the northern circuit.

Dr Chilufya noted that investors should also consider opportunities in areas such as Lumangwe Falls, Ntumbachushi Falls and Chishimba Falls.

He also called for investment in visitor facilities, including eateries at Mwela Rocks to improve the tourism experience.

"Kasaba Bay is a very attractive destination which cannot be ignored in the northern sector. Zambia is endowed with such beautiful attractions and all we just need investors," he said.

The director also revealed that the ministry in partnership with the Zambia Tourism Agency (ZTA), is set to introduce Tourism Media Excellence Awards to recognise journalists who contribute to promoting Zambia’s tourism destinations through storytelling.

The initiative is part of efforts to support President Hakainde Hichilema’s Grow Zambia Agenda which targets five million international tourist arrivals by 2031.

Dr Chilufya noted that the awards would recognise the media’s role in marketing Zambia’s tourism potential and attracting investment into the sector.

He shared that the ministry wants journalists to tell stories that highlight the country’s tourism endowment, particularly attractions in the Northern Province and the wider northern circuit.

“We want to create a sister award for the media. This will be sitting in the Department of Tourism, the Tourism Media Excellence Awards. We want to celebrate the media for a job well done in selling Zambia’s destinations through storytelling and we believe this will encourage more journalists to tell stories that sell our country to the world. In turn, that would attract more tourists here,," Dr Chilufya said.

Meanwhile, ZTA scting chief executive officer Abigail Shansonga said the awards would help strengthen the strategic dissemination of tourism information.

Shansonga also encouraged journalists to share their experiences from travelling around Zambia and use their personal platforms to showcase the country’s tourism attractions.

National Museums Board director general George Mudenda also called for increased media coverage of Zambia’s museums and historical heritage.

Mudenda said museums should be viewed as centres for preserving and communicating Zambia’s history and heritage, rather than being associated with witchcraft.

He encouraged journalists to produce documentaries and other content highlighting Zambia’s historical sites and stories, including the country’s connection to the First World War.

"Do you know that the last bullet for the first world war was shot in Zambia? Who has ever told that story? These are stories that you will find in museums, it's not just about witchcraft," he said.

KALAMBO FALLS NOMINATION FOR UNESCO GAINS MOMENTUM

Government has called for concerted effort among stakeholders to strengthen the nomination of Kalambo Falls National Monument in Mbala District for recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Northern Province Acting Permanent Secretary Ms Beauty Undi-Phiri says the nomination is an important opportunity to improve the protection, management, research and promotion of Kalambo Falls.

The Acting PS said this in a speech read on her behalf by Provincial Assistant Secretary Jordan Mwenya, during a stakeholders’ meeting.

National Heritage Conservation Commission (NHCC) Executive Director Mr Kagosi Mwamulowa says the preservation and development of national monuments has the potential to increase tourism and contribute to economic growth.

Kalambo Falls is an important archaeological and cultural heritage site because it contains evidence of human activity dating back more than 476,000 years.

The site is also known for its well-preserved ancient wooden artefacts, which survived because they were preserved in waterlogged conditions.

The National Heritage Conservation Commission is currently preparing the nomination and plans to submit it to UNESCO by 1 February 2027.

If the nomination is successful, Kalambo Falls could gain international recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, highlighting its importance not only to Zambia but to the history and heritage of humanity.

STUDENTS WELCOME PRESIDENTIAL IRRIGATION INITIATIVE

Students at Kasama College of Education have welcomed the Presidential Irrigation Initiative, saying the programme is giving them practical agricultural skills that will complement their academic training and create opportunities for self-employment.

The students said the hands-on experience in crop production was helping them connect classroom theory to real-life farming, while preparing them to apply agricultural knowledge in their future careers.

Student teacher Stella Kangwa said the initiative was complementing the Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC) by giving learners an opportunity to put classroom knowledge into practice.

“This programme gives us an opportunity to learn beyond the classroom. The skills we are gaining in farming will be useful not only to us as individuals but also when we start teaching,” she said.

Another student, Blessings Chela, said the initiative could provide graduates with an alternative source of income while they awaited formal employment.

Mr Chela said the agricultural skills acquired through the programme would enable graduates to engage in crop production and generate income.

The students were speaking when a delegation from the Ministry of Education monitored the implementation of the Presidential Irrigation Initiative at Kasama College of Education.

And Ministry of Education Assistant Director Alvin Masendeke said the initiative would equip learners with practical agricultural skills while contributing to national food production and strengthening school feeding programmes.

Mr Masendeke said 350 schools countrywide had been selected to pioneer the initiative, with 36 schools in Northern Province drawn from all 12 districts.

“The initiative is intended to give learners practical skills that they can use in their communities and later in their working lives,” Mr Masendeke said.

He said the programme would also encourage schools to produce their own food through both rain-fed and irrigated maize production, thereby contributing to food security and self-sufficiency.

Mr Masendeke said the 36 pioneer schools in Northern Province were expected to serve as learning centres for other institutions as the programme expanded.

He explained that the Presidential Irrigation Initiative, which is a priority area of the Presidential Delivery Unit (PDU), seeks to transform educational institutions into active agricultural hubs that contribute to food production and skills development.

Meanwhile, One of the Project Coordinators George Simuyemba said student participation in the programme had been overwhelming, with learners taking part in agricultural activities on a daily basis.

Mr Simuyemba said the high level of participation showed that learners were embracing the opportunity to acquire practical agricultural knowledge and skills.

TOURISM WEEK ACTIVITIES UNDERWAY IN KASAMA

KASAMA — The Ministry of Tourism has lined up various activities in Kasama to commemorate World Tourism Week, including cultural performances, hospitality training and digital tourism training for operators.

Assistant Director in the Department of Tourism, Kanyembo Chiwele, has called for the use of digital technology to preserve and promote Zambia's cultural heritage.

Speaking during a traditional dance competition at Urban Hotel ahead of the Northern-Muchinga 2026 World Tourism Day commemoration, Mr. Chiwele said traditional dances should be digitally documented and promoted on social media and other platforms.

He also commended young people for taking part in cultural activities, noting that this will help preserve Zambia's traditions.

Meanwhile, Regional Tourism Development Coordinator for Northern and Muchinga, Kambole Sikate, said other activities include customer-care training for hospitality workers and digital training on online marketing, website creation and access to government services.

He has urged residents to turn up for the main World Tourism Day commemoration on 26th September, 2026 in Kasama.

PROPOSED MSME BILL TO STRENGTHEN SECTOR

KASAMA- 22nd September,2026

Government says the proposed Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Bill will provide a dedicated legal and institutional framework to support the sector's growth, formalization and competitiveness.

Speaking at the official opening of the two-day stakeholder consultation on the draft Bill at the Provincial Administration, Northern Province Assistant Secretary Jordan Mwenya, who spoke on behalf of the Acting Permanent Secretary, said the MSME sector is a key driver of economic growth, employment creation, poverty reduction and wealth generation, particularly among women, youth and vulnerable groups.

Mr. Mwenya said the absence of dedicated legislation has led to fragmented support, limited access to finance and weak institutional coordination.

He said the consultation offers an opportunity for government, the private sector and other stakeholders to scrutinize the draft Bill and propose improvements, and urged participants to share their views freely to ensure the final law reflects the realities of MSMEs and creates an enabling environment for growth, innovation and job creation.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprise Development Assistant Director for Business Development and Grants, Chikula Chinyanta, said stakeholder input is critical in shaping a Bill that is responsive to the sector's needs.

Mr. Chinyanta said the consultations, which are being conducted across all provinces, aim to gather views from associations, chambers of commerce and other players, and that all submissions will be considered when finalizing the Bill, which is central to advancing the Grow Zambia Agenda.

Local Government Service Commission is currently in Northern Province conducting a full staff audit.

To ensure accountability and streamline operations, the Commission is auditing local authorities across Northern Province to address over-employment and inspect ongoing CDF projects.

During a courtesy call on Provincial Administration, Commissioner Justina Phiri explained that the exercise will also resolve long-standing staff promotion and confirmation issues.

Northern Province Administration welcomed the team, stressing that balanced staffing and strong project oversight are essential to bringing development to local communities.
