CBU Joins International Project to Strengthen Teacher Education for Sustainable Development in Africa

The Copperbelt University (CBU) is proud to be among 15 institutions from Africa and Europe participating in the Sub-Saharan Africa Teacher Leadership for Education for Sustainable Development (SSATL-ESD) project, a transformative initiative aimed at strengthening teacher leadership and advancing sustainable education across Africa.

Co-funded by the European Commission through the Erasmus+ Programme, the project seeks to equip teacher educators and academic leaders with the skills needed to prepare future generations for sustainable development, green economies, and inclusive societies.

CBU’s participation reflects its strong commitment to research excellence and educational innovation. Leading the university’s involvement is UNESCO Chair and Principal Researcher Professor Overson Shumba, alongside Dr Allan Musonda, Dr Asiana Banda, Mrs Mercy Fandamu, and Mr Alex Simpande, who recently completed the project’s Training of Trainers Programme.

The initiative focuses on curriculum innovation, transformative teaching methods, and practical institutional change through Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Change Projects.

The international consortium is led by Leuphana University Lüneburg (Germany), with regional coordination by Rhodes University (South Africa), bringing together partners from Zambia, South Africa, Namibia, Malawi, Kenya, Cyprus, and Greece.

TEIKYO UNIVERSITY EXPLORES EXPANDED HEALTH SCIENCES COLLABORATION WITH THE COPPERBELT UNIVERSITY.

The Copperbelt University (CBU) has welcomed a delegation from Teikyo University, Japan, led by President Professor Okinaga, as the two institutions explore collaboration opportunities in health sciences education and research.

The partnership discussions were focused on strengthening programmes in Public Health, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, and Pharmacy, creating opportunities for curriculum development, student exchange, joint research, and practical training.

Speaking during the meeting, CBU Vice Chancellor Professor Imasiku Nyambe expressed confidence in the collaboration, describing it as an important step toward strengthening the University’s capacity in health sciences education and research.

He noted that communities on the Copperbelt share similarities with areas in Lusaka where the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is supporting community-based public health programmes, making them ideal practicum sites for students while supporting impactful community engagement and applied research.

Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation, Professor Bernard Hangombe, also highlighted growing opportunities within the partnership, including interest from the Zambia Institute of Public Health to sponsor students pursuing a Master of Public Health through CBU’s Lusaka Campus.

As part of their visit, the Teikyo University delegation is touring key facilities, including the School of Medicine, Chimwemwe Level One Hospital, and Mushili Compound, to better understand local healthcare systems and identify areas for collaboration.

With JICA also expressing interest in supporting the partnership, this collaboration marks another important milestone in CBU’s commitment to internationalisation, academic excellence, and training globally competent health professionals.

INSTITUTE OF INTERNAL AUDITORS SEEKS STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP WITH CBU TO ENHANCE STUDENT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT.

The Copperbelt University is set to strengthen its collaboration with the Institute of Internal Auditors Zambia (IIA) following a courtesy call on Vice Chancellor Professor Imasiku Nyambe, during which the institute expressed interest in formalising a partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The proposed partnership aims to create meaningful opportunities for students in areas such as professional growth and development, internship placements, research collaboration, scholarship opportunities, career guidance, industry exposure, and curriculum development.

Speaking during the meeting, the President of the Institute, Mr Lubinda Namiluko said the institution was looking forward to work closely with CBU in preparing students for successful careers in the auditing and financial governance profession.

As part of the proposed collaboration, the Institute also pledged to sponsor atleast three best graduating student in Business with an opportunity to pursue the globally recognised Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) qualification, a move expected to further motivate academic excellence and professional advancement among students.

The President further demonstrated personal commitment to the university’s development agenda by contributing K20,000 towards the CBU Challenge, the university’s flagship fundraising initiative aimed at addressing key infrastructure and learning environment needs.

Receiving the delegation, Professor Nyambe welcomed the Institute’s interest in partnering with the university and commended the proposed areas of collaboration, particularly those aimed at enhancing student employability and strengthening academic-industry linkages.

The Vice Chancellor highlighted the importance of expanding internship opportunities for students and called on the Institute to assist in absorbing more students for industrial attachments, noting that practical industry exposure remains critical in preparing graduates for the demands of the professional world.

Professor Nyambe also placed particular emphasis on research collaboration, underscoring the need for stronger partnerships that promote knowledge generation and evidence-based solutions.

During the engagement, the Vice Chancellor also shared information on the CBU Challenge, outlining the university’s ongoing efforts to mobilise support for critical institutional development projects.

Following the courtesy call, members of the IIA proceeded to engage with students through an interactive session with the university’s Internal Audit Student Chapter, where they provided mentorship, career insights, and guidance on professional certification pathways.

CBU continues to distinguish itself as the only university in Zambia with a dedicated Internal Audit Student Chapter, a move that reflects the institution’s commitment to professional excellence and industry relevance.

CBU Hosts RUFORUM 2026 Pre-Launch

The Copperbelt University yesterday successfully hosted the pre-launch of the 22nd RUFORUM Annual General Meeting (AGM), marking an important milestone as Zambia prepares to host the continental conference in Livingstone from 30th November to 4th December 2026.

The event brought together senior government officials, university leaders, researchers, development partners, private sector representatives, and students to discuss how higher education institutions can catalyse agricultural transformation and sustainable development across Africa.

Officially launching the preparations on behalf of the Minister of Education, the Permanent Secretary for Educational Services, Dr Kelvin Mambwe, reaffirmed Government’s commitment to strengthening higher education, research, and innovation, and announced Zambia’s readiness to sign the RUFORUM Charter.

In his remarks, CBU Vice Chancellor Prof. Imasiku Nyambe described the pre-launch as a strategic platform for collaboration and renewed commitment to Africa’s transformation through higher education, science, innovation, and research. He also highlighted CBU’s continued contribution to sustainable agriculture and climate resilience through programmes offered under the School of Natural Resources.

RUFORUM Executive Secretary Prof. Patrick Okori commended Zambia and its universities for their collective efforts and emphasized the critical role of African universities in addressing challenges such as food insecurity, youth unemployment, and agricultural productivity.

CBU SIGNS STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP WITH ZAMBIA AIRPORTS CORPORATION TO ADVANCE DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION

The Copperbelt University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Zambia Airports Corporation Limited aimed at supporting the Corporation’s digital transformation agenda through the development and implementation of an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system.

Through the partnership, CBU, through the ICT Business and Innovation Centre (CBU-IBIC), will provide technical expertise in developing locally driven digital solutions to improve efficiency, innovation, and service delivery.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, Vice Chancellor Professor Imasiku Nyambe said the partnership reflects the University’s commitment to supporting Zambia’s National Digital Transformation Agenda through innovation and home-grown technological solutions.

Zambia Airports Corporation Limited Managing Director, Mr. Urvesh Desai, described the partnership as a strategic investment in Zambia’s digital future, emphasizing that digital transformation is key to improving passenger experience, strengthening operational excellence, and building local capacity.

The collaboration reinforces CBU’s role in driving national development through research, technology, and strategic partnerships.
