Kitwe - 27th May 2026

The Kitwe District Epidemic Preparedness Committee convened this morning to review preparedness and prevention measures for Ebola and Hanta virus disease.

The meeting formed part of routine public health preparedness efforts, in view of disease outbreaks that have been reported in some neighbouring countries, including Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Kitwe District Commissioner, Mr. Oncemore Ngonomo, who chaired the meeting, stressed the importance of multisectoral collaboration in strengthening preparedness and ensuring that the district remains ready to respond effectively to any public health threat.

He noted that preparedness is key to protecting lives and preventing the spread of disease.

Public Health Specialist, Dr. Prince Kaputula, made a presentation on the transmission and prevention of Ebola and Hanta viruses. He explained that Ebola may spread through contact with blood or body fluids of infected persons or animals, while Hanta virus is commonly associated with rodents and can be transmitted through contact with rodent urine, saliva, droppings, bites or contaminated dust.

Kitwe District Health Director, Dr. Francis Lywali, emphasized the importance of early detection, rapid isolation of suspected cases, contact tracing and coordinated response mechanisms as part of strengthening epidemic preparedness.

The district has no confirmed case of Ebola or Hanta virus, and residents are encouraged to remain calm while observing recommended public health precautions.
