A TRIBUTE TO MY PRESIDENT, MY ELDER BROTHER DR EDGAR CHAGWA LUNGU.
It is with profound sorrow and an aching heart that I received the devastating news of the passing of our Sixth Republican President, Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, this morning in South Africa.
The pain of this loss is personal, deep, and difficult to describe. I had the distinct honour and privilege of serving closely with President Lungu during his presidency, particularly as his Foreign Minister. In those years, I came to know not just as Head of State, but a humble, thoughtful, and often misunderstood leader a man who carried the burden of our country’s leadership with dignity and quiet strength.
His recent reemergence onto the political scene , though misjudged by many was not for personal gain, nor a mere longing for power. It was a selfless response to a call he felt deep in his spirit to salvage. He rose, once more, not for himself, but for Zambia. That was the man I knew sacrificial, resolute, and profoundly patriotic.
In his death, Zambia has lost a towering figure. But his legacy, and the challenge he posed to us all to rise above petty differences and act in the best interest of our country must not die with him.
Now more than ever, the country must unite and show love for one another. We owe it to President Lungu, to his memory, and to the dream he never stopped believing in a Zambia of justice, equity, and shared prosperity.
My thoughts and prayers are with the former First Lady, Mama Esther Lungu, the Lungu family, the Tonse/PF family and indeed the entire nation.
May the soul of President Edgar Chagwa Lungu rest in eternal peace.
