ZAMBEZI RIVER AUTHORITY EYES STRONGER GLOBAL ROLE AFTER JOINING IHA

The Zambezi River Authority (the Authority) has taken a confident stride onto the global energy stage, joining the International Hydropower Association (IHA) in a move expected to sharpen its operational capacity and strengthen the bankability of its major infrastructure projects.

The move signals a renewed sense of purpose—one that blends regional priorities with global ambition. As the Authority deepens its engagement with the international hydropower community, it is poised to not only strengthen its operations (including the ongoing Kariba Dam Rehabilitation Project) but also elevate the credibility of its project pipeline, particularly the Batoka Gorge Hydro-electric Scheme, ensuring that future developments are robust, resilient, and ready for financing..

The Authority`s Chief Executive, Eng. Munyaradzi C. Munodawafa, emphasised:
“Harnessing the Zambezi River responsibly is not just about ensuring that there is a sustainable supply of water for hydropower generation; the Authority’s mission extends beyond power generation to securing long-term benefits for communities and ecosystems”

With energy demand rising across Southern Africa, the stakes are high. Reliable power supply remains central to industrial growth and economic transformation, while climate change continues to reshape water availability and infrastructure resilience. For the Authority, jointly owned by the Governments of the Republics of Zambia and Zimbabwe—the milestone signals more than international recognition. It marks a strategic pivot towards deeper collaboration, global best practices, and enhanced technical credibility at a time when investment in hydro-power projects is increasingly scrutinised.

Against this backdrop, the Authority’s entry into the IHA is both timely and strategic. By aligning itself with international standards and expertise, the Authority is positioning its projects to attract investment and deliver sustainable outcomes as membership in the IHA places the the Authority among leading institutions shaping the future of large-dam discourse.

📢 UPDATE: Kariba Dam Rehabilitation Project Nearing Completion!

The Zambezi River Authority is pleased to share progress on the Kariba Dam Rehabilitation Project (KDRP) - now approximately 94% complete and on track for full completion by the end of 2026!

🔧 Spillway Refurbishment Progress
✅ Phase 1 (started May 2019): 99% complete
✅ Phase 2 (started August 2024): 70% complete, with completion expected by September 2026.

Works currently underway include installation of new hoisting systems for the dam’s six sluice gates, enhancing their safety, reliability, and smooth operation.

🌍 About the Project
The KDRP is a US$294 million initiative aimed at strengthening the long-term safety and functionality of the Kariba Dam.

Key milestones:
✔️ Plunge Pool Reshaping – completed in September 2024
✔️ Spillway Refurbishment – ongoing (Phases 1 & 2)
✔️ Institutional Strengthening – improving dam safety systems and capacity.

⚡ Why This Matters
This project is critical for:
🔹 Preventing risks of flooding and infrastructure damage
🔹 Protecting downstream communities
🔹 Supporting reliable hydropower generation
🔹 Enhancing sustainable water management

An Early Warning System is also being developed to strengthen communication during water releases.

UPDATE ON THE KDRP- SPILLWAY REFURBISHMENT WORKS

Lusaka, 7th May 2026 – The Zambezi River Authority (the Authority) is pleased to provide an update regarding the progress recorded thus far in respect of the ex*****on of the Kariba Dam Rehabilitation Project (KDRP), which is i approximately 94% complete. The project, which is critical in so far as the safeguarding of the long-term safety and operational efficiency of the Kariba Dam is concerned, remains on course for completion by the end of the fourth Quarter of 2026.
