Fellow Citizens,
Today, I had the pleasure of hosting Members of the Zambia Women Parliamentarians Caucus (ZWPC) for a Meet and Greet Breakfast at Parliament Buildings as we commemorate Women’s Month.
March remains a significant moment for reflection and action as we continue to advance the ideals of International Women’s Day under the theme “Rights. Equality. Empowerment. For ALL Women and Girls.”
This is a call for us, as leaders, to move beyond commitment and take deliberate steps toward ensuring equal opportunities for women in all spheres of society.
While women in Zambia continue to play a critical role in governance and national development, their representation in Parliament remains low. This reminds us that there is still more work to be done to address the barriers that limit women’s full participation in leadership.
That is why the Constitution amendment Act No. 13 of 2025 was critical to strengthen inclusive representation by creating, for the first time in Zambia, pathways for more women to be elected to Parliament.
Additionally, the enacted Constitution provides an opportunity to enhance the representation of youth and other marginalised groups.
Practical steps to support a more enabling environment have also been undertaken, including the establishment of a Committee on Women Parliamentarians and the development of a crèche facility within Parliament to support Members of Parliament and staff.
As we approach the 2026 General Elections, I encourage women across the country to actively participate in leadership and governance. Your voice matters, your contribution is vital and your leadership is needed.
Together, let us continue to uplift one another, inspire the next generation and work towards a more inclusive and representative Zambia.
