The research includes desk study, consultation of resource persons, analyses of selected cases of Agri-Food SMEs having obtained venture capital as well as of Venture Capital Suppliers & Mechanisms operational in the selected focus countries: Kenya, Zambia and Mali.

Dear All,

In these days International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) new elected President Gilbert Houngbo is visiting Zambia with his Team (among which our Country Director Ms Abla Benhammouche). We are really honoured to have him here and show him the amazing work our Zambian smallholder farmers are doing in order to increase their incomes and changing their lives by being fully engaged in , thanks also to the support of SAPP and the other IFAD projects (S3P, E-SLIP and RUFEP). The warm welcome given to IFAD President couldn' be so...magical!

Engaging African Youth in Agribusiness in a Changing Climate

Africa has the largest population of young people in the world, with 226 million people aged 15 to 24 (UNEP, 2015). Each year, young people graduate from school seeking to enter the continent’s workforce, often with no success. The continent is facing a double employment crisis—a lack of jobs for youth, and an increasing number of young people in need of work. However, as the largest sector of employment in Africa, agriculture promises opportunities for job growth and economic prosperity.

Join the online discussion forum to dialogue on the challenges and opportunities for engaging youth in agribusiness in a changing climate.
The discussions will be focused on the following questions:

1) What challenges do youth-led agribusinesses face in a changing climate?
2) What are the business drivers of climate-smart agriculture (CSA)? And how does this appeal to youth?
3) What career and business opportunities do CSA offer to youth?
4) Across Africa, are there any concrete examples of successful or promising innovative CSA practices and technologies that the youth can learn from?
5) Which policies and programmes should governments put in place to facilitate the involvement of youth in agribusiness?

"Scaling-up my agribusiness-Agripreneurs"

AgriProFocus network in collaboration with partners is working on a youth platform “Scaling-up my business”. The purpose of this platform is to provide a platform for learning and business to business linkages that will foster the growth of Youth-led agribusinesses and networks.

The objectives are to:

1. Facilitate business-to-business sessions that will match youth entrepreneurs with industry players. (Agribusiness company industry leaders, investors, financial institutions (bank & non-bank))

2. Provide learning opportunities for business growth through intense masterclasses offered by experienced organisations.

The network is therefore looking for youth who meet the following criteria:

· Aged between 17 – 36 years

· Understand basic spoken English

· Have clear identification of gaps in scaling up their business

· Have a registered company

· Are involved in horticulture (tomatoes/vegetables), grains, poultry, and livestock

· Have a running agribusiness with minimum of 2 years in operation and have a plan to expand their business.

At the end of March 2017, IFAD and SAPP Teams in conjuction with Provincial and District Officers from the Ministry of Agriculture & Livestock HQ Lusaka in Zambia undertook the last supervision mission in Solwezi (NW Province) in order to assess the status of several aquaculture projects, and have a talk with smallholder farmers.

Global youth video competition 2017 now open!

If you are between the ages of 18 and 30 we want to hear about the inspiring actions you are taking to combat climate change in a compelling and concise maximum three minute video. We would like you to showcase for us a project or campaign you are involved in which relates to one of this year's categories.

The competition is co-organized by the UNFCCC and the UNDP-GEF Small Grants Programme, and implemented by Television for the Environment-tve.
