ZIFLP SUPPORTS FARMER LED IRRIGATION SCHEMES (FLIS), AMIDST A CHALLENGING 2023/24 FARMING SEASON.

The 2023/24 agriculture farming season is under heavy threat as the country faces a crisis exacerbated by climate change and the El Nino weather phenomenon, which is threatening national and household food security with about 45% of planted staple crops being destroyed. The risks and impacts of climate change and variability have become more evident and, on the increase, given the more frequent flash floods, droughts and increasing temperatures that have been affecting agricultural productivity negatively. Such scenarios call for change in approaches from the business as usual to more proactive interventions that aim at addressing some of these climate challenges being experienced.

EP-JSLP MRV FRAMEWORK MULTI-STAKEHOLDER WORKSHOP
The Government of Zambia is developing a Jurisdictional Emissions Reduction Programme for the Eastern Province. The proposed Programme is called Eastern Province Jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Programme (EP-JSLP); it is a long-term sustainability Results-Based Payment Programme, Jurisdictional in approach and performance-based in nature. Its main objective is to promote reduced Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions from the Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector, while simultaneously improving rural livelihoods through biodiversity conservation and habitat management.
The EP-JSLP leverages and integrates the investment works currently ongoing under the Zambia Integrated Forest Landscape Project (ZIFLP), other Biodiversity management Projects and the existing Carbon Projects in EP. The Jurisdictional Programme will also ensure equitable sharing of the generated benefits to ensure this results in reduced deforestation & degradation, increased community benefits and enhanced community resilience to climate change risks and impacts.
To ensure correct quantification of the Emissions Reductions (VERs), the EP-JSLP will be focused on the generation of Verifiable Emissions Reductions using a robust monitoring, measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) System that is currently under development with the support of ZIFLP.
As part of the development process, stakeholder consultations at the National level and in Eastern Province have commenced with the objective of consulting widely with all key stakeholders prior to the development of the MRV Framework. It is expected that after these consultations, a robust MRV system, stratified at Provincial, District and Community/Chiefdom levels and detailed to provide procedures, guidelines and plans for carbon accounting in the most transparent, accurate, efficient and practical way will be produced to feed into the National Climate Change Portal hosted by ZEMA.
Currently, a three-day multi-stakeholder workshop is being held at Protea Hotel in Chipata to gather information to develop the MRV Framework; drawing participation from Government, Private Sector, CSO and Community representation.

The Zambia Integrated Forest Landscape Project (ZIFLP) is helping rural communities to better manage their natural resources and improve their livelihoods. One of the ways the Project is doing this is by providing sub-grants as alternative livelihood options in Agriculture, Forestry and Wildlife. The aim of these sub-grants is to enhance the rural communities’/ farmers’ incomes and livelihoods through income-generation and value-addition activities in the Eastern Province. The intervention is also aimed at the creation of environmental benefits and safeguarding the environment by promoting behaviour change as relates to the local community’s utilisation and management of their natural resources. The intervention further serves as a deterrent or means to reduce heavy community reliance on the use of natural resources (Forests and wildlife) for their daily needs, using local solutions.
The subgrants’ support takes the approach where, the local communities propose the activities they intend to implement as an alternative livelihood, which are then appraised and supported by the ZIFLP with the view of contributing to its development objectives. Ultimately the aim is to address the felt needs of the respective rural communities in a meaningful and sustainable manner. The Project supports 360, these subprojects viz, the business infrastructure (physical buildings and requisite equipment) including startup capital to support the respective sub-projects as identified by the local communities themselves.

ZIFLP currently support 64 active sub-grant projects of various sizes ranging from USD 10,000 to USD 150,000. Vizwani Multipurpose Cooperative Society is one of the Cooperatives in Chasefu District of Eastern Province that is being supported by the Project. Vizwani Cooperative was granted ZMW 1,792,000.00 to implement an Integrated Fish and Forestry Conservation sub-project. Under this sub-project, Vizwani cooperative is operating four fishponds and managing a 10-ha community forest area. Working with the Forestry Department and Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, the community group has been trained in modern aquaculture technologies and sustainable forest management with a view of improving biodiversity conservation while contributing to poverty reduction and local livelihood improvement.
Currently, the cooperative is in active production and is expected to reap benefits as captured in the clip, courtesy of Diamond News Media.
