The O.R. Tambo Africa Research Chairs Initiative (ORTARChI) is a prestigious pan-African research program designed to foster sustainable development and high-end research skills in Africa. In Zambia, the University of Zambia (UNZA) is a recipient of ORTARChI and hosts the UNZA research chair led by Prof. Kawawa Banda at the Integrated Water Resources Management Centre (IWRM). The research chair focuses on enhancing sustainable Water Conservation and Catchment Management in the Zambezi and Luapula river basins aimed at strengthening water security and sustainability in Zambia. The research chair is funded by the National Research Fund (NRF) of South Africa, the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada and the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC).

The research chair holder Prof. Kawawa Banda made a presentation at a meeting hosted by the Ministry of Technology and Science and NSTC with a delegation from South Africa’s Department of Science and Innovation, it was noted that the research chair has, since its inception, significantly contributed to the successful graduation od students at both Master’s and PhD levels.

World IP Day

26 April of every year, member states of the World Intellectual Organization (WIPO) commemorate World Intellectual Property Day.
World Intellectual Property Day raises awareness about Intellectual Property (IP) by celebrating the contributions of inventors and creators globally and highlighting the role of IP rights such copyright, trademarks, patents, designs, and trade secrets in stimulating innovation and creativity.

The 2026 World Intellectual Property Day is being commemorated under the theme “IP and Sports: Ready, Set, Innovate.” This theme was adopted because sports provides a familiar and engaging way to see how IP rights such as patents, trademarks, copyrights and designs work together to encourage innovation and investment.

The National Science and Technology Council (NSTC), with a mandate to promote Science, Technology and Innovation, encourage innovators across the country to develop practical and impactful innovations that will not only respond to national challenges and opportunities but also stimulate entrepreneurship especially among the youth and contribute to sustainable economic growth.

NSTC DEVELOPING A STEM PROMOTION FRAMEWORK AND THE S&T AWARDS GUIDELINES

The National Science and Technology Council (NSTC)’s mandate is to promote science, technology, and innovation in Zambia. One important area of its work is encouraging learners to take an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The aim is to help students understand how science and technology support national development and to encourage more learners to choose careers in STEM fields.

To achieve this goal, the NSTC has so far established two (2) working STEM Centres of Excellence (CoE) in Kasempa at Kasempa Day Secondary School in Northwestern Province and Nkadabwe Secondary School, Sinazongwe in Southern Province respectively. Another CoE is currently under construction in Kasama at Misamfu Day Secondary School, which is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

These STEM Centres of Excellence are equipped with laboratory equipment to improve access to science learning, allow learners to carry out experiments and gain practical experience in science subjects. This helps students move beyond theory and better understand how scientific ideas work in practice.

The NSTC also promotes STEM education through conferences, boot camps, and motivational talks. During these activities, professionals working in STEM fields share their experiences with students. The aim is to help learners see the opportunities that exist in science and technology careers. Special attention is given to encouraging girls to take interest in STEM subjects.

Another activity that the NSTC organises is the annual Science and Technology Merit Awards. These awards recognise the work of Zambian scientists, research institutions and journalists who contribute to the growth of science and technology in the country. By recognising these efforts, the NSTC hopes to encourage more people to support the advancement of science and innovation.

To strengthen these efforts, the NSTC is developing a STEM Promotion Framework as well as guidelines for implementing the Science and Technology Awards Scheme. These documents will provide clear directions on how STEM promotion activities and the awards scheme programme will be implemented and managed.

Stakeholders engaged for the exercise include the Zambia Academy of Sciences (ZaAS), Higher Education Authority (HEA), Directorate of National Science Centre (NSC), TEVETA, Dziwa Science and Technology Trust (DSaT) and Hero Control Systems.

The Ministry of Technology and Science is hosting the 8th African Network of Biosphere Reserves (AfriMAB) General Assembly in Livingstone, Zambia.

AfriMAB was established in 1996 in Dakar, Senegal, following a meeting of African National Committees of the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Program and biosphere reserve managers.

The establishment of AfriMAB was aimed at strengthening regional cooperation and enhancing the capacity of its members to promote biosphere reserves as sites for innovation and learning in support of environmental conservation and sustainable socio-economic development.

One of the core objectives of the AfriMAB General Assembly is to address emerging priorities related to governance, financing, and the contribution of biosphere reserves to sustainable development.

The 8th AfriMAB General Assembly taking place in Livingstone, Zambia, under theme: “Harnessing Africa’s Natural Resources Through Ecosystem-Friendly Technologies,” comes at a pivotal moment for African biosphere reserves and the MAB Program.

With the launch of the Hangzhou MAB Strategic Action Plan, the Assembly has two main objectives: first, to explore General Assembly’s theme and second, to define priorities and strategies for implementing the Hangzhou Strategic Action Plan in African biosphere reserves over the next decade.

The 2026 General Assembly was officially opened by the Minister Tourism Hon. Rodney Sikumba at the Avani Resort Hotel and will run from 9th - 13th March 2026.

The NSTC, as an institution under the Ministry of Technology and Science, is exhibiting at the 8th AfriMAB General Assembly, this is in alignment with its strategic role and national mandate in the STI sector.
