On 18th September 2024, the Wildlife and Environmental Conservation Society of Zambia (WECSZ) under the Community Coined Climate Actions project witnessed the official launch and presentation of the Makumucha Kasensa Kalonga Conservation Group constitution and committee in Mbila Ward, in a ceremony graced by His Royal Highness Chief Shezongo under the historic “Mubanga Tree.” This marked the chief's first visit to the Makumucha Zone, where he expressed his strong support for the conservation and protection of the Makumucha Springs and Stream.
The event featured an emotional story from Senior Headman Mulilabanyama, a village elder, who recounted the origins of the name "Makumucha" and stressed the importance of preserving the area for future generations.
Over 120 people attended the launch, including Chief Shezongo and representatives from organizations such as SeedCo. The newly appointed committee of the conservation group was introduced, and the constitution's vision, mission, objectives, and key bylaws were presented to guide the Group's work. WECSZ National Coordinator, Mr. Shawa, underscored the importance of involving children in environmental initiatives and expressed his delight at the active participation of the children and youth in the newly established committee.
Recognizing that gardening is a primary livelihood for many in the area, SeedCo pledged to support local farmers and gardeners by providing free seedlings to boost agricultural productivity. The day also featured a poetry performance by students from Mbila Secondary School, raising awareness about the issues of child marriages and the critical importance of educating the girl child.
The launch signifies a crucial step toward safeguarding the Makumucha Springs and promoting Locally Led Adaptation and the use of Nature Based Solutions to help communities adapt to the impacts of Climate Change.
