Knitting Jumpers for African Babies

Knitting Jumpers for African Babies NOT A COLLECTION AGENCY- YOU can post jumpers direct to Nawa Mwakoi at address in Zambia(see below) An interactive support network exists here.

We have achieved our original goal which was to knit 100 jumpers and cardigans for AIDS affected African babies and orphaned children. They were delivered directly to orphanages and hospitals in Ethiopia via an Australian family who have personal connections there . This family is now not able to help us with distribution of garments. We are NOT a Collection Agency, but we have built a following f

rom around the globe of knitters keen to help and do our best to share information and contacts as they are sent to us. Please contact me if you know of any Collection Points anywhere in the world. We encourage knitters of all ages and abilities to join in, and to check with the contacts we have in various countries if they are able to take them from you to pass them on in Africa. You can post knitted items direct to Africa. Please mark the parcel as "gift only, of no commercial value. "*
UPDATE October 2021. Nawa , our collection agent in Africa, must now pay a government tax to collect parcels from the P.O. Please ALSO send a minimum of GBP2.50 or AU$5 US $3.70 donation for this when you post a parcel . Any extra will go towards supporting African orphans in foster care. Many thanks indeed. The children will be most grateful . You can find simple jumper patterns by scrolling back through posts in this group. More Patterns are found on the page for KAS ( Knit-a-square ) They also have details of where to send items.

Today was an exciting day πŸ˜€ Nawa's handsome boy, Lato , has grown up!! Now 6, he went to Orientation Day at his new school.Classes start on Monday. πŸ™Thanks to members of this knitting group who contributed to the costs of his uniform, which allayed Nawa's worries of how she would manage. In Zambia uniform + a one off fee for school cleaning supplies and consumables like paper is compulsory on enrolment No uniform, no school shoes, no payment, no education. A Big day for Lato and Nawa πŸ‘₯️

Hi everyone, Marion here from Qld Australia wishing you all a Healthy and Happy New Year. It's been a while since I've posted, as I'm experiencing some health challenges and was all consumed with palliative care for my Mum who passed peacefully in her own home last year. It was a challenging year year for many of us. We are determined to instil 2026 with new Positive energy and continue to bring joy into the lifes of needy children and women in Zambia. Here's a few photos of Christmas cheer Nawa and her adopted grandson ,Mwenda, brought to local chilcdren not far from Nawa's home. Funding was very limited, so no presents or communal meal this year.
But children were excited to receive lollies and balloons from Santa. Tribute to Gail's son Matty to whom the Santa suit belonged. Quite a well known fact that Santa lives at Nawa's house and only appears once a year πŸŽ„πŸ˜ƒ ❀️ Next year Nawa hopes to have a Chair for Santa to sit on for Santa photos.

Nawa has taken delivery of a Solar inverter energy system to operate sewing machines at a time of crippling National Power outages of up to 18 hours a day. Solar panels will be installed at the workshop she has established with a small group of women under the banner of Tusa Hand ( 'Helping Hand' ) The women will be sewing saleable items producing an income stream to support Tusa Hand's charitable work. Distribution of knitted garments to families and children in need will continue to take place alongside meeting other needs in vulnerable communities. Many thanks to Carol Mead and the women from Canberra Circle of Women - Sew for Change for raising the funds to purchase the solar power system πŸ™
