Good eye care goes beyond examinations and treatment. Patient counselling plays a vital role in every eye outreach camp, helping individuals understand their condition, available treatment options and the importance of seeking timely care.

Through counselling, patients gain the confidence to make informed decisions about their eye health, improving treatment uptake and outcomes. Every conversation brings us one step closer to preventing avoidable vision loss and restoring sight.

Throwback to Orbis Day

A day to reflect on why we do what we do and the impact we strive to create every day. Orbis Day was an opportunity to celebrate our shared vision, recognise the dedication of our teams and partners and renew our commitment to strengthening eye care services for communities in need.

As we look back, we are reminded that behind every milestone is a person whose life has been transformed through improved access to quality eye care. Together, we continue to move forward with purpose, passion, and a renewed mission to build a future where no one is left behind because of avoidable vision loss.

A year away from the classroom seemed like a dream slipping out of reach for Agness. Due to an uncorrected refractive error, she struggled with her vision and was forced to miss almost an entire year of school, putting her education and future aspirations on hold.

Thanks to the availability of eye care services in Mpongwe District, Agness received the eye examination and prescription glasses she needed. With her sight restored, she returned to the classroom with renewed confidence and determination.

Today, she is back on track, pursuing her education and holding firmly to her dream of one day becoming a medical doctor. Agness' story is a powerful reminder that something as simple as a pair of spectacles can transform a child's life, unlocking opportunities, restoring hope, and helping young people achieve their full potential.

Clear vision is more than seeing better. It is about learning better, dreaming bigger, and building a brighter future.

Investing in People. Strengthening Eye Care. Transforming Lives.

Quality eye care starts with skilled professionals. By investing in the continuous training and development of ophthalmologists, we are strengthening the delivery of eye care services and helping ensure that more people receive timely, safe, and effective treatment.

Through hospital-based training programs implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Health, Orbis Zambia continues to build the capacity of eye health professionals. These hands-on learning opportunities enhance clinical skills, promote the adoption of best practices and contribute to stronger health systems that can better serve communities.

Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, thrive and reach their full potential. By ensuring learners have access to quality eye care services, we are helping remove barriers to education and empowering them with the gift of clear vision. When children can see better, they can learn better.

Every day, Fredrick dedicates his time to educating community members about the importance of eye health through Information, Education and Communication (IEC) activities. He helps people recognize the signs of eye conditions and encourages them to seek timely care by referring patients to eye clinics.

Through his commitment, more people are gaining access to sight-saving services and the knowledge they need to protect their vision.

Community health workers like Fredrick are helping bring eye care closer to those who need it most.

Last week, Orbis Zambia joined the global Orbis team and eye health leaders from across Africa and around the world at the Africa Ophthalmology Council meeting in Cape Town.

The event provided an opportunity to share knowledge, explore innovative approaches to strengthening ophthalmology services, and discuss ways to build the eye health workforce needed to meet growing demand.

We are especially proud of our Clinical Advisor, Dr. Mulubwa Serenje, who served as a panelist at the Women Leaders in Eye Health Coffee Hour, sharing lessons on mentorship, leadership and creating opportunities for future generations of ophthalmologists.

The discussions reinforced a shared vision: investing in people, partnerships and capacity building remains key to advancing eye care and ensuring more people can access the services they need.
