MEDIA STATEMENT

As the Easter holiday approaches, the Public Service Workers Union, General Secretary, Mr. Vernon Hamwende, has urged all public-service workers to exercise restraint in spending. He said extravagant or irresponsible expenditures during this period place undue strain on household budgets and can affect focus when duties resume.

Mr. Hamwende has reaffirmed that the nation relies on uninterrupted productivity from its public-service workforce. He has since implored members to return healthy and in high spirits after the holiday, ready to serve, ensuring that essential services continue without disruption.

The General Secretary reminds the Public Service that prudent financial choices now support sustainable service delivery and the broader growth of our country, urging responsible celebration and keeping their commitment to the public at the forefront.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Public Service Workers Union (PSWU) after a critical analysis, is appalled and deeply concerned by the recent display of blatant disrespect and indiscipline by a pupil from Senanga Secondary School in Western Province, Zambia. This egregious behavior has sparked outrage and put the careers of 5 dedicated teachers on the line, with charges of assault hanging over their heads like a dark cloud.

We strongly condemn this unacceptable behavior, which undermines the very fabric of our education system. Teachers are the backbone of our society, imparting knowledge, values, and respect for authority. To bite the hand that feeds is not only ungrateful but also a recipe for disaster. The PSWU firmly condemns the pupil's indiscipline - it was unnecessary. Every public service worker drives the economy and steers sustainability. Much as it was wrong on one hand for the teachers to take a yonder punitive measure on the pupil, no learner should take advantage of the removal of certain types of punishment to undermine teachers' integrity — they're merely trying to shape tomorrow's minds.

We urge pupils to remember that respect is a two-way street. Elderly people, including teachers, deserve reverence and deference. A few bad apples shouldn't tarnish many reputations. We call on parents, guardians, and the community to promote a culture of respect, discipline, and gratitude towards educators.

The PSWU does not condone irresponsible learner-behavior meant to undermine teachers' authority. We urge authorities to address and ameliorate such occurrences. As PSWU, we fight tirelessly for a safe and respectful working environment for public service workers.

The Public Service Workers Union recently conducted a series of innovative capacity-building training sessions, designed to synergize government initiatives and ensure that public service workers at all levels espouse the productivity culture.

The PSWU's strategic work plan is geared towards effectuating a tangible improvement in productivity within the public service sector, through multifaceted engagements and collaborations across the country.

Pursuant to the nation's quest to enhance productivity, a paradigm shift was inaugurated on 5th March, 2026, with a view to bolstering productivity indices. On this momentous occasion, the Minister of Labour and Social Security, Brenda Tambatamba, formally initiated a 100-day productivity activism campaign, thereby endeavouring to instil a culture of productivity within the nation.

Consequent to extant research and statistical analyses in Zambia, it has been ascertained that labour productivity indices are suboptimal, prompting the Ministry of Labour to undertake a proactive campaign to educate and sensitize workers on the imperative of cultivating this ethos, thereby contributing to the country's socio-economic advancement.

PUBLIC SERVICE WORKERS UNION SUPPORTS GOVERNMENT'S YOUTH EMPOWERMENT INITIATIVES AS PRESIDENT HICHILEMA URGES YOUTH TO SEIZE OPPORTUNITIES AT YOUTH INDABA 2026.

The Public Service Workers Union (PSWU) welcomes President Hakainde Hichilema's call to action at the Youth Indaba 2026, emphasizing the importance of empowering young Zambians. As an organization committed to promoting the welfare of public service workers, we recognize the significance of investing in the youth.

President Hakainde Hichilema has emphasized the importance of youth empowerment, urging young Zambians to seize opportunities and make the most of their youthful years. Speaking at the Youth Indaba 2026, themed "Arise and Soar," the President highlighted the government's commitment to improving the lives of young people.

The President noted that the government is taking the interests of the youth seriously, recognizing the potential of youthfulness to drive greatness.

"Take advantage of your youthfulness to do great things. After the youthful years, it's regrettable," he said.

To support youth empowerment, all government and parastatals will incorporate internship programs, providing young people with valuable work experience. Additionally, 20% of empowerment loans are allocated to the Youth of Zambia, with various investment areas deliberately tailored towards youth empowerment.

President Hichilema remains committed to improving the lives of the youth of Zambia, urging them not to waste their youthfulness but grab available opportunities.

President Hichilema also assured the youth and the nation at large of free, fair, and credible elections slated for August 13, 2026.

The Youth Indaba 2026 provided a platform for young Zambians to engage with policymakers and industry leaders, fostering dialogue on youth empowerment and national development.
