In 1855, David Livingstone claimed he discovered Victoria Falls, but our people had already found it and named it Mosi-oa-Tunya, meaning "the smoke that thunders," a beautiful and fitting name. To downplay our ancestors in Southern Province, Livingstone renamed the falls after Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom to gain favour and recognition. In truth, David Livingstone did not discover Victoria Falls , our people did.
Yesterday, President Hakainde Hichilema said he created over 150,000 jobs. In 2022, he hired 30,496 teachers. However, he didn’t build any schools, and you need schools to have teachers. The previous presidents built schools, which created teacher jobs. President Hichilema only signed an order to hire teachers. We think building schools was a better choice than just hiring teachers. He also hired health workers without building hospitals, police officers without new police stations, and other security jobs. This isn’t real job creation, and it’s not the paradise some students claim. It’s like saying Dr. Livingstone discovered Victoria Falls.
Today, we have loadshedding because there isn’t enough electricity infrastructure. The president hasn’t fixed this with an order, as it needs real solutions like building power plants. No politician has a clear plan to solve this. While it’s not all President Hichilema’s fault, past leaders also failed to fix it.
The University of Zambia is meant for very smart people who should give honest advice to the president about improving the country. What we saw yesterday shows why some UNZA graduates still think a president can create jobs. Governments don’t create jobs entrepreneurs do. Next time, think about how you can create jobs in the country instead of praising a failure.
All Zambian presidents, from Kaunda to Hichilema, love the people and the country. The main issue is that Zambia has limited resources. We need our politicians to share clear plans on how they will develop our country despite these challenges. Instead, they only talk about the country's problems and repeat the same promises without offering real solutions.
If you are a Zambian with a Grade 12 certificate and you disagree with the current politics of both the ruling party and opposition leaders, and you believe this type of politics will not move our country forward, join the New Political Party Consultative Forum. This group is discussing whether Zambia needs a new political party. Please share this post.
