Kuomboka Ceremony: The primary role of the Maoma is to signal the start of the annual Kuomboka festival (usually March/April), when the Litunga (King) moves from the flooded Barotse plains to higher ground.

Summoning Paddlers: The drums summon royal paddlers from across the kingdom to gather at the Lealui palace in preparation for the voyage.

Royal Protocol: The Kufulumuna ceremony marks the first beats of the drums, traditionally performed by the Litunga himself, followed by members of the royal family and, finally, the general public.

Origin & History: These drums were historically captured from the Mambukushu people by a Lozi prince and transformed into symbols of the Barotseland kingdom. They were once used to announce the installation of a new Litunga or to call warriors to battle.

Craftsmanship: Historically crafted from large trees like Mwande (Acacia) and Muzauli, they are covered with thick hides from strong bulls, requiring high skill to create their signature deep sound.

Ritual Sound: The Maoma are accompanied by the Lozi Silimba (a wooden xylophone) during the ceremonial procession
