Mufulira Heads of government Departments Sweep Central Business District
The District Development Coordinating Committee (DDCC) of Mufulira has resolved to clean the district twice a month to ensure that the district is free from outbreaks of diseases.
The District Commissioner Mr. Chanda Kabwe led the heads of government officials and stake holders of Mufulira district to clean the town centre.
Mr. Kabwe said the DDCC members resolved to clean the town twice a month to demonstrate government’s commitment to keeping the district clean and support the ‘keep Zambia Clean’ campaign initiated by the Ministry of Local Government and Housing as it was one way good health of the people would be maintained.
The District Commissioner explained that the cleaning exercise was meant to sensitise the public with the habit of throwing litre anyhow to stop the behaviour as it was making the town dirty.
He said the exercise was also meant to teach the people the importance of living in a clean environment as such diseases like diarrhea, typhoid and dysentery would be prevented.
“I want a message to get to traders that they must live in a clean environment and also beautify our district,” said Mr. Kabwe.
He said the traders handled food and if the food stuff was not kept in a clean environment, outbreaks of diseases would manifest in the district.
Mr. Kabwe also mentioned that the DDCC would empower street vendors by buying them cleaning equipments to enable them clean their premises.
And Eunice Chitwala a street vendor expressed happiness at the stance taken by the heads of government departments to sweep the street saying that the exercise was very encouraging to the street vendors as it had set an example and she called upon her fellow street vendors to ensure that they cleaned areas where they traded from adding that they were the generators of the waste and should not expect the local authority to clean up their trading premises.
