Sikongo Boarding Secondary School’s Chicken Venture Takes Flight — Quite Literally

Sikongo Boarding Secondary School is discovering that sometimes, the road to financial sustainability is paved not with chalk and textbooks—but with feathers, feed, and a lot of confident clucking.
In a spirited move to diversify income beyond government grants, the school ventured into poultry farming in the first quarter of 2026. What began as a modest agricultural project has quickly grown into a lively enterprise that now supplies chickens to local households and businesses, including nearby restaurants whose menus are, quite literally, feeling the impact.
The initiative has not gone unnoticed. Madam Lilian Kachana, one of the happy beneficiaries, applauded the school’s entrepreneurial spirit and encouraged management to continue rolling out projects that stimulate both learning and local economic activity. After all, nothing says “community partnership” like a school that can supply both education and supper.
Earlier this year, the institution signaled its ambition to become more self-reliant through practical ventures such as chicken rearing, fish farming, and rice cultivation. True to its word, the poultry project is already strutting ahead of expectations, with 320 market-ready chickens prepared to contribute meaningfully to the school’s revenue base—and perhaps to a few Sunday pots across Sikongo.
If this momentum continues, Sikongo Boarding Secondary School may soon be known not only for academic excellence, but also as the place where chickens graduate with honors before anyone else does.

WILDLIFE OFFICERS ATTACKED IN SIKONGO DISTRICT

The Ministry of Tourism has announced the arrest of six individuals in Sikongo District for attacking Wildlife Police Officers.

In a statement, Saturday, the Ministry’s Principal Public Relations Officer, Nelly Banda, disclosed that the officers were ambushed while investigating illegal timber and poaching activities.

Banda explained that the suspects were armed with dangerous weapons and attempted to expel the officers from a protected area.

She revealed that one officer was assaulted and efforts were made to seize government fi****ms.

Banda confirmed that reinforcements were deployed, leading to the apprehension of the suspects.

She identified the arrested individuals as Mulimi Kabula, Mutusi Mundia, Moses Simakando, Njamba Sitali, Kailu Nasilele, and Namushi Namushi.

She further noted that one of the accused is an officer from the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, alleged to be a ringleader.

The Principal Public Relations Officer clarified that the suspects face charges under the Penal Code and the Wildlife Act.

She assured the public that no suspect was mistreated during the operation or detention.

Banda stressed that all detainees were medically examined and their rights respected.

She warned that interfering with Wildlife Police Officers is a serious criminal offence.

The Principal Public Relations Officer condemned the spread of false information aimed at undermining lawful operations and reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to wildlife protection and sustainable tourism.

Zambia Devolution Support Program (ZDSP) water project in Sikongo taking shape.

Western Province, Provincial Local Government Officer, Mr. Nixon Nkwapu, accompanied by the Zambia Devolution Support Program's Principal Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, Mss. Lipalile Kawana, recently visited Sikongo District to assess progress on the water project under implementation.

The Zambia Devolution Support Program is funding this K2,436,000 project, being implemented through a partnership between Sikongo Town Council and Western Water Solution via a Memorandum of Understanding, ensuring high-quality and professional delivery.

Under the Memorandum of Understanding, Sikongo Council, will supply and install a 70,000-liter water tank, while Western Water Solution handles piping and connections. The Council has so far, procured the tank and awaits delivery.

Upon completion, the project will improve water supply for about 10,000 Sikongo residents, addressing current challenges of water supply.

Mr. Nkwapu praised the Council for initiating the project and urged expedited work, emphasizing water supply's critical need.

A dark cloud befalls Sikongo Town Council once again.

We are saddened to announce the passing of another employee of Sikongo Town Council, Mr. Kingstone Chivungila who saved as Stores Officer since 2017-2025. Mr. Chivungila passed away in the early ours of today after a short illness.
Sikongo Town Council Management and Staff extends their deepest condolences to the Chivungila's family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
Mr. Kingstone Chivungila will be deeply missed, and his contributions to Sikongo will never be forgotten.

May his Soul Rest in Internal Peace.

REMEMBERING PAUL TEMBO: ASSASSINATED ON 06 JULY 2001

Paul Tembo became a member of the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy and was elected to the National Assembly in Kabwe in the 1991 general elections. In 1992 he was appointed Deputy Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry. However, he was replaced by Shiabyungwe Shengamo after less than a year in post. In 1993 he became Deputy Minister of Finance, before being moved to Deputy Minister in the President's Office later in the year.

Prior to the 1996 general elections Tembo was chosen as the MMD's candidate despite opposition from local activists who supported Austin Chewe. However, Chewe ran as an independent and defeated Tembo. He was a campaign manager for President Frederick Chiluba as he sought to change the constitution to allow a third term in office.

However, after losing an election to become Vice Chairman of the MMD, Tembo resigned from the party and subsequently joined the opposition Forum for Democracy and Development party, becoming a member of its executive.

In 2001 Tembo was due to testify to a tribunal investigating three ministers for misappropriation. However, he was shot dead at his home in Lusaka in the early morning of 6 July. Apparently, Tembo’s wife was somewhat implicated and subsequently arrested and detained.

He was shot dead at his home in Lusaka in the early morning of 6 July.

The murder suspects who were been transported from Kitwes Kamfinsa Prisons died in what is believed to be a road accident set up at Kafulafuta Road, about 40kM from Ndola Town on their way to court in Lusaka when the Land Rover rammed into a Stationary Truck on a Sunday night Two Police officers died too. His wife was the prime suspect but was let off because of lack of witnesses. It

*CHARLES AKENDE IS A COMRADE*

Looking at the celebrations in and around Ndola city makes us look at one fact that the Ruling party can have it's way if it wishes. They fought hard to ensure that the playing field was tilted towards them. So the issue of playing smart in our dear District Commissioner's jailing is not even near convincing to the right thinking people. We will leave it here and just share what Mr Lubasi Nalumango posted below:

"Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Once said “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter…”

This statement I hold true in the light of the events of the past few days that saw the sentencing of Mr. Charles Akende, party loyalist and District Commissioner for Sikongo in western Province.

For me its not the legality of it, but the emotion that the whole scenario invokes. As to the innocence or guiltiness of the man in question, that remains the preserve of the courts and eye witnesses -for the record, I belong to neither.

Quick facts are that it was a family feud albeit a nasty one. Hearts were broken and love was lost but not limbs nor life . The circumstances have changed and the passion that led to this fight was in good faith. These circumstances should have been used to mitigate and thus call for reconciliation and truce.

After a long-fought battle in opposition, to be incarcerated by your own in victory, is the worst form of betrayal. This is the perception regardless of its validity that the Akende saga has created among comrades.

The question which still lingers on my mind is; how he survived an oppressive regime as a free man only to be jailed by his own❓I really don’t know what we could have done as a party to save this man, but somehow, I feel we have failed him as comrades.

In battle we say esprit de corps, “together we rise or fall” coherence even in adversity. My spirit is broken we have not been true to the comrade.

Just like the priest says in his sermon; *“say it now or forever hold your peace”* I wrote this to free my soul coz in silence I had no peace. I don’t wish for my life to begin to end so I speak on this one issue because its one of those things that matter."
