SMC SCOOPS BEST DISPLAY AT INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY
Solwezi Municipal Council has emerged Best Display during the 2026 International Literacy Day commemoration held in Solwezi District under the theme, “Literacy for People, the Planet and Prosperity.”
The event was graced by Solwezi District Education Board Secretary (DEBS), Mr. Webster Kasangula, who served as Guest of Honour and called for stronger collaboration among education stakeholders, local authorities and communities in promoting literacy as a foundation for individual empowerment and sustainable development.
Mr. Kasangula said literacy should not be viewed merely as the ability to read and write, but as an essential tool that enables people to acquire knowledge, make informed decisions, access opportunities and actively participate in the development of their communities.
He commended Solwezi Municipal Council and other stakeholders for complementing government efforts through community-based literacy and skills development programmes.
He said initiatives that take learning beyond the traditional classroom and into communities are particularly important because they create opportunities for children, young people and adults who may otherwise have limited access to education.
Mr. Kasangula further encouraged literacy providers, teachers, community development officers, skills instructors, volunteers and learners to remain committed to lifelong learning, noting that an educated and skilled population is critical to building resilient communities and achieving sustainable economic development.
Speaking on behalf of Acting Director of Housing and Social Services, Mrs. Evelyn Phiri, Solwezi Municipal Council Bus Stations Manager Mr. Harry Phiri said the commemoration was a reminder that literacy is a powerful instrument for empowerment, social inclusion and sustainable community development.
He said Solwezi Municipal Council recognises the important role literacy plays in improving livelihoods, promoting informed decision-making, strengthening social inclusion and contributing to economic development.
The Municipality reaffirms its commitment to working closely with the Ministry of Education, community organisations, cooperating partners and other stakeholders to expand access to learning opportunities for children, young people and adults.
The Best Display award was a notable highlight of the commemoration and underscored Solwezi Municipal Council’s efforts to make literacy and skills development more visible, accessible and relevant to the community.
