Municipality of Beitbridge Welcome to the official Municipality of Beitbridge page. Engage your council, get the latest developments and news around Beitbridge.

Your opinion is very important to us. The town, Beitbridge, is named after Alfred Beit, a British citizen who found the De Beers diamond mining company. It is at the border between Zimbabwe and South Africa. Beitbridge Town is the southernmost town of the country and is in Matabeleland South Province. The name also refers to the Beitbridge Border Post, the busiest inland border post in Sub-Saharan

Africa; about three thousand (3000) people cross the border on a daily basis. The town, founded in 1929, was for many years the terminus of the railway fromPretoria, until a rail connection to Rutenga was built in 1974. Beitbridge Town Council was granted its town status in August 2005. Previously a Town Board under the Beitbridge Rural District Council administered the town; a Town Council was then established and came into being on the 1st of July 2007. The Town Council area is divided into six wards, each with an elected councillor. Its mandate as a local authority is to provide services to the community of Beitbridge. The total coverage of the town is 83 square kilometres and its population has doubled from 22 000 in 2002 population census to approximately 43 000 according 2012 population census figures. Due to the proximity of the town to South Africa, most people from the inland districts flock into Beitbridge to do trade and others finally settle in Beitbridge.

♻️ FROM THE MARATHON TO A CLEANER, GREENER BEITBRIDGE! ♻️
Riding high on the incredible success of the recent Beitbridge Mayor’s Half Marathon, the Municipality of Beitbridge is keeping that winning momentum going this time, by launching an exciting new Waste Segregation Initiative to completely transform how we handle waste in our beautiful town.
To kickstart the campaign, our Environmental Health section just conducted a hands-on training session for municipal employees at the main office. We have officially introduced a new, color-coded bin system at our headquarters.
Here is your quick guide to the new colors:
🟨 Yellow ➔ Cans
🟥 Red ➔ Glass
🟩 Green ➔ Food Waste
🟦 Blue ➔ Plastic Waste
⬛ Black ➔ General Waste
During the training, our team also deep-dived into the core 4 Rs of Waste Management:
❌ REFUSE what we don’t need,
📉 REDUCE what we use,
🔄 RE-USE what we can, and
♻️ RECYCLE the rest

We aren't stopping at the main office! We are actively preparing to roll these specialized sorting bins out across the entire town, moving next to:
🔹 Business Centers & Industrial Areas
🔹 Institutions (Schools & Churches)
🔹 Gated Communities
🔹 Residential Neighborhoods
To make sure your sorting efforts pay off, the Municipality will be establishing designated waste sorting sites for recycling spread throughout Beitbridge town. Furthermore, by the end of the year, we will be conducting a Waste Characterization Survey to analyze our local waste patterns and continuously sharpen our long-term environmental strategy.
A clean environment starts with the choices we make every day. Let’s carry the team spirit of the Mayor's Marathon into making Beitbridge a model sustainable town.

Major transformation underway in Beitbridge

The Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Matabeleland South, Hon. Albert Nguluvhe, today officially launched a major infrastructure project to extend the Beitbridge Central Business District (CBD).

With the existing CBD becoming constrained, this extension is a massive step towards transforming our border town into a modern commercial hub.

Here is what you need to know about the project:

-What’s coming: 33 commercial stands, including shopping complexes, a medical centre, recreational facilities, and parking areas.

-Modern Vision: The municipality is targeting high-rise buildings with a minimum of four floors.

The Plan: A Private contractor Tiger Eye will service the area with roads, water, sewer, and drainage infrastructure over the next 6 to 9 months.
People-Centred: Minister Nguluvhe emphasized that this project goes beyond concrete, it's about creating jobs and improving lives for our local citizens.

Exciting times are ahead for local growth and investment.
