We had an amazing opportunity training NetOne stuff on snake identification and first aid treatments. Having trained almost 200 employees, we managed to demystify myths, snake behaviors and other grey areas concerning the various worksite that are visited. It was amazing partnering with Zimbabwe Institute of Wildlife Conservation under Zimparks. Its always necessary to put safety first.

Keeping Snakes Out of Your Yard: Tips and Strategies

Introduction:
Snakes are fascinating creatures that play an important role in the ecosystem. However, having them in your yard can be a cause for concern, especially if you live in an area where venomous snakes are present. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to make your yard less appealing to these slithering visitors. In this article, we will explore effective methods to keep snakes out of your yard, promoting a safe and snake-free outdoor environment.

1. Clear Clutter:
Snakes seek out hiding spots, so it's essential to remove clutter from your yard. Trim overgrown bushes, mow the lawn regularly, and keep the vegetation around your property well-maintained. By eliminating potential snake hiding places, you reduce the attractiveness of your yard as a habitat.

2. Seal Entry Points:
Inspect your yard for any holes, gaps, or cracks that snakes can use to enter. Pay close attention to fences, walls, and foundations. Seal these entry points using caulk, concrete, or other appropriate materials. By securing your yard's perimeter, you create a barrier that snakes will find difficult to pe*****te.

3. Install Snake-proof Fencing:
Consider installing a snake-proof fence around your yard. Use solid materials such as metal or thick plastic and ensure that the fence goes all the way down to the ground. The fence should be at least three feet high and have mesh openings small enough to prevent snakes from slithering through. Regularly inspect the fence for any damage or gaps and repair them promptly.

4. Remove Attractants:
Snakes are drawn to areas with abundant food sources. Keep your yard free of attractants such as bird feeders, uncovered compost piles, and pet food left outdoors. By eliminating these food sources, you reduce the likelihood of snakes being enticed into your yard.

5. Regular Yard Maintenance:
Maintaining a well-groomed yard is an effective way to discourage snakes. Remove fallen leaves, piles of wood, and rocks, as these can provide hiding spots. Regularly mow your lawn and keep it short. Snakes are less likely to venture into open, well-maintained areas.

6. Educate Yourself:
Take the time to learn about the types of snakes in your area and their habits. Understand their behavior, preferred habitats, and the areas they are most likely to be found. This knowledge will help you implement targeted prevention strategies and make informed decisions if you encounter a snake.

Conclusion:
Keeping snakes out of your yard requires a combination of proactive measures, regular maintenance, and a respect for these fascinating creatures. By clearing clutter, sealing entry points, installing appropriate fencing, removing attractants, using repellents, and staying informed, you can create an environment that is less appealing to snakes. Remember to approach snakes with caution and seek professional assistance if you are unsure about handling or identifying a snake species. With these strategies in place, you can enjoy a snake-free yard while promoting a harmonious coexistence with nature.

Managed to rescue this 2.4m Black Mamba (Rovambira) that had made its way into the roof via trees that were hanging close to the house in Ridgemont. The working space was very limited however there was more than enough space for a hot tempered super fast snake. The heat in the heat in the ceiling was unbearable but perfect temperature for the snake to operate at full force. We managed to capture it after a 20 minute struggle and we put it in a sac to safely transport it.
