Empowering Communities through Purposeful Play and Climate Action
Introduction
Zimconserve is proud to report on the recent developments in our Purposeful Play program, which effectively combines football with critical climate action education. This initiative not only engages young people in sports but also empowers them with knowledge and practical skills to combat climate issues.
Training of Coaches
From September 18 to September 22, 2023, Coaches across Continents(CAC)trained two of our dedicated coaches, Eddie and Isobel, in purposeful play games that specifically address climate issues. This training was part of a broader effort to enhance the capacity of our coaching staff and expand the reach of our program across the continent. With this training, Zimconserve has grown its team to six coaches, all committed to promoting climate awareness through engaging, athletic activities.
Program Expansion
Currently, Zimconserve operates in 50 partner schools, visiting each school approximately once a week. During these visits, our coaches facilitate two sessions that blend football with essential lessons on climate action. Through this unique approach, we aim to inspire the next generation to take active roles in addressing environmental challenges.
Community Impact
In partnership with our USA ally, How Global, we successfully installed a solar-powered borehole at Chitsvedemo program. This initiative has directly benefited 250 students, who participate in our purposeful play program, learning about the significance of solar energy, water conservation, nutrition gardens, and fruit trees in climate action.
The establishment of a nutrition garden within the program has allowed these 250 children to engage in hands-on learning, reinforcing their understanding of sustainable practices. This garden not only supports the students but also serves the entire school community by promoting healthy eating and environmental stewardship.
Engagement through Sports
To further enhance our outreach, we have implemented a strategy of donating branded soccer balls and football jerseys with environmental themes to the schools we work with. This initiative not only fosters school spirit but also serves as a platform for teaching climate action games. By integrating education with sports, we make learning about environmental sustainability enjoyable and impactful.
Media Recognition
The success of the Zimconserve Purposeful Play project has garnered international attention, with features on Deutsche Welle Environmental TV Bulletin. This exposure is vital in raising awareness about the intersection of sports and climate action, showcasing how football can be a powerful tool for education and change.

The Purposeful Play program is a testament to the innovative ways we can address climate action through sports. By training coaches, engaging students, and involving the community, Zimconserve is paving the way for a generation that understands the importance of sustainability.
