Harare Provincial Development Coordinator Mr Tafadzwa Muguti says residents should protect wetlands so as to preserve water sources.
Speaking at an interactive stakeholder meeting on wetlands organized by the Harare Wetlands Trust at Town House Mr Muguti said Harare should have its own Environmental Action Plan that allows it to issue an environment impact assessment certificate.
"Local authorities in Harare Metropolitan Province should fully domesticate the Ramsar Convention and protect existing Ramsar sites and encourage the development of nature reserves on wetlands," he said.
Mr Muguti said people who name drop to instil fear while building on wetlands will not win.

Council replaces old trees in Africa Unity Square
Council is cutting down old trees that pose danger to life in Africa Unity Square as part of the park renewal efforts.
Residents have previously urged council to renew the park by planting new trees and manicuring its surroundings.
The renewal project began last year with the planting of trees that are now three metres tall.
Old trees have been falling damaging vehicles, buildings, blocking roads, and posing danger to human life.
Council will soon renew the water fountains and beef up park security during day and night.
The park borehole will be replaced to ensure watering the park is continuous.
Council is partnering Meikles Hotel in the project.
