Dear Community,
Drug and substance abuse is affecting too many of our homes, schools, workplaces, and streets in Harare and beyond. What may start as "just trying it" or "just to cope" quickly turns into pain for individuals, families, and all of us.
# # # # *The Effects We’re Seeing*
- *Health*: Addiction, mental health struggles like anxiety and depression, organ damage, and increased risk of HIV, TB, and other illnesses.
- *Families*: Broken relationships, domestic violence, loss of trust, and children growing up without proper care.
- *Education & Work*: School dropouts, poor performance, job losses, and lost potential.
- *Community Safety*: Higher rates of crime, accidents, violence, and homelessness.
# # # # *The Repercussions*
1. *To the individual*: Loss of health, freedom, dignity, and future opportunities. Legal trouble and a criminal record can follow.
2. *To families*: Financial strain, emotional trauma, and cycles of abuse that affect the next generation.
3. *To the community*: Overburdened clinics and police, unsafe neighborhoods, and a weaker economy when our youth are lost to addiction.
# # # # *But There Is Hope*
We can change this together.
- *Talk openly*: Check in on your children, siblings, and friends. Listen without judgment.
- *Choose support over shame*: Addiction is a health issue. Treatment and counseling are available. No one has to go through it alone.
- *Protect our spaces*: Schools, churches, sports clubs, and community groups can be places of mentorship, skills, and purpose.
- *Report & act*: If you see drug dealing near schools or vulnerable people, report to community leaders or authorities.
To anyone struggling: You are not weak, and you are not alone. Help exists, and recovery is possible. To families: You don’t have to carry this in silence.
Let’s build a community where our young people choose life, purpose, and health over substances. Let’s be each other’s keepers.
*"A healthy community starts with healthy choices. Together, we can break the cycle."*
If you or someone you know needs help, reach out to local clinics, ZLHR, or community support groups. You can also talk to a trusted leader, counselor, or health worker.
With care and hope,
