Long distances did not stop communities from showing up.

The recently concluded Mobile Registration Exercise in Mutasa District recorded an overwhelming turnout as citizens accessed birth registration, national identity registration, death registration and other vital civil registration services brought closer to the people.

Conducted by the Civil Registry Department in partnership with UNICEF Zimbabwe and the Department of Social Development, the outreach programme ran from 18–24 May 2026 and reflected Government’s continued commitment to ensuring that no community is left behind.

Thank you Mutasa District, for turning out in your numbers.

Mutasa District, Manicaland Province
Community Engangement (week 10-16 May 2026).

For some families in remote communities, accessing birth registration services can mean travelling long distances, navigating difficult terrain and delaying opportunities for their children to access vital civil registration services.

But this week in Mutasa District, civil registration services are being brought closer to the people.

Ahead of the ongoing mobile registration exercise, the Civil Registry Department, together with UNICEF Zimbabwe and the Department of Social Development, engaged communities across the district to raise awareness on the importance of birth registration and prepare families for the mobile registration exercise programme.

Traditional leaders, religious leaders, caregivers, social workers and community members came together to openly discuss the challenges families face in accessing civil registration services.

The engagements also provided communities with clear information on registration requirements, outreach dates and locations, while encouraging parents and guardians to take advantage of the mobile registration exercise now underway in their areas.

Every child deserves a legal identity. Every family deserves access to civil registration services. And through partnerships and community engagement, no one and no place should be left behind.

FROM service delivery to child protection, the Civil Registry Department Zimbabwe continues to play a critical role.

The Department participated in the Zimbabwe–South Africa Cross-Border Coordination Meeting on Unaccompanied and Separated Children (UASC), held in Beitbridge from 9 to 10 April 2026.

The meeting, organised by the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare in partnership with UNICEF, IOM and other development partners, brought together stakeholders to strengthen coordination in protecting children on the move.

On 10 April, the delegation visited the Beitbridge Reception Centre, which receives unaccompanied children being repatriated to Zimbabwe from South Africa. The visit provided insight into the environment supporting children on the move and reinforced the importance of a multi-stakeholder approach to integrated child protection systems.

The Civil Registry Department remains a key partner in facilitating identity verification and supporting family tracing processes to reconnect unaccompanied minors with their families. Civil registration services further ensure that vulnerable children are documented and protected.

The Department’s participation in the forum reflects ongoing efforts to ensure that no child is left without a legal identity.

The engagement was attended by Deputy Registrar General (Provincial Operations), Mrs Christina Chikerema and Provincial Registrar (Matabeleland South), Mrs Jane Peters.

In BEITBRIDGE, strengthening access to legal identity remains a key priority, particularly for children on the move.

On 9 April 2026, the Civil Registry Department Zimbabwe hosted a Multi-Partner Trust Fund (MPTF) delegation comprising UNICEF Zimbabwe IOM, CESVI and the Department of Social Development at the Beitbridge District Registry Office.

The visit focused on identifying gaps and strengthening collaboration in civil registration services, with particular emphasis on protecting children on the move through access to legal identity.

Discussions highlighted the need to enhance awareness, scale up mobile registration initiatives, accelerate computerisation and continue improving service delivery.

The tour also included a visit to the Beitbridge Border Post Sub-Office, which currently issues burial orders for deceased persons being repatriated into the country. The sub-office was identified as a strategic point for real-time identity verification of unaccompanied minors, reinforcing the importance of its computerisation.

The Beitbridge District Registry Office continues to provide essential services including birth registration, national identity documents and passports, ensuring inclusive access to legal documentation.

The delegation was received by Deputy Registrar General (Provincial Operations) Mrs Christina Chikerema, Provincial Registrar (Matabeleland South) Mrs Jane Peters and District Registrar Beitbridge, Mr Muleya.

This initiative reflects ongoing efforts to ensure that no child is left without a legal identity.
