🌧️ RAIN SEASON CHALLENGES IN MBİRE 🌍
Resilience in the Face of Nature’s Toughest Conditions

The rainy season in Mbire brings life — but it also comes with serious challenges for communities. From floods and wildlife conflicts to dangerous river conditions, many families face risks that threaten both livelihoods and safety.

March alone highlighted the severity of these challenges:
⚠️ A woman was seriously injured by a crocodile along the Hunyani River
🐘 In Ward 3, elephants destroyed an entire sorghum field belonging to a local farmer
🌊 Flash floods along the Msengezi River submerged crops and trees, including the Chidzumo moringa plantation

These events leave many households vulnerable, affecting food security and community well-being.

Despite this, there is hope. 💚
MRDC Game Scouts, with support from Carbon Green Africa (CGA) under the Kariba REDD+ Project, are working tirelessly to protect communities by:
✔️ Educating villagers on how to deter elephants
✔️ Warning against crossing or approaching flooded rivers
✔️ Conducting patrols to monitor wildlife, remove snares, and prevent poaching

Their efforts are helping communities stay informed, prepared, and safer during these difficult times.

“Awareness and preparedness can save lives.”

Together, through collaboration and continued support, Mbire communities are building resilience against environmental challenges. 🌿

🌱 IMPROVING LIVELIHOODS THROUGH VEGETABLE PRODUCTION 🌱
Blessed Garden Leading the Way in Binga District

Agriculture continues to be a powerful driver of food security, and income generation, in rural communities. Across the project area, farmers are transitioning from subsistence to semi-commercial farming, building resilience and reducing dependency on external support.

One inspiring example is Blessed Garden in Binga District, supported by Carbon Green Africa (CGA) through the Kariba REDD+ Project. Through continuous training and support from KRP field officers and Agritex, farmers have gained the skills and knowledge to grow and manage diverse crops all year round.

This past month was especially rewarding 💪 — farmers worked tirelessly, planting, managing, harvesting, and supplying vegetables to markets both within and beyond the project area. The garden produced a wide range of crops including tomatoes and covo.

This income is transforming lives — enabling families to pay school fees, buy household essentials, and improve their overall well-being.

Today, Blessed Garden stands as a beacon of hope and self-reliance, proving that with the right support, knowledge, and determination, communities can build sustainable livelihoods and secure their future. 🌍💚

🌳 Sustainable Forest Management in Action🌳

Tree planting continues to grow as a powerful community movement in Zimbabwe, bringing people together to restore forests, protect biodiversity, and fight climate change. By absorbing carbon dioxide and improving environmental conditions, trees are not just plants — they are lifelines for future generations.

Since 2011, Carbon Green Africa (CGA) through the Kariba REDD+ Project has been driving these initiatives across schools, clinics, and communities — turning local areas into eco-friendly hubs of sustainability.

CGA’s Operations team partnered with an Agritex Officer in Negande Ward 5 for a tree-planting day at Malembeja Primary School. 🌱 A total of 30 seedlings, including fruit trees, were planted with the active participation of pupils, teachers, parents, and the school leadership.

What made this moment truly special?
👉 Each child adopted a tree and pledged to care for it — even during school holidays.

This initiative is more than just planting trees — it is about instilling a culture of environmental stewardship, empowering young minds to protect nature and build a greener future.

“Today’s learners are tomorrow’s environmental guardians.”

Together, we are growing forests, nurturing knowledge, and building resilient communities. 🌍💚

🌿 Reviving Agriculture Education at Chikova Secondary School 🌿

What was once an underutilised school garden has now become a centre of learning, food security, and transformation at Chikova Secondary School in Hurungwe Ward 9.

After facing challenges with agriculture teachers, the school garden remained idle for some time. However, through collaboration between the School Development Committee (SDC) and the community, the garden was revived — and with support from Carbon Green Africa (CGA) through the Kariba REDD+ Project, everything changed.

Through KRP trainings, both students and community members realised the true value of the garden. This sparked the revival of the school’s agriculture department, turning the garden into a practical learning hub where students now carry out real agricultural activities instead of relying on theory alone. 📚🌱

The impact has been remarkable:
✅ Students gain hands-on agricultural skills
✅ Improved chances of better academic results
✅ The garden provides maize, vegetables, and tomatoes for school meals
✅ Access to clean water through a solarised borehole and a 147,000L storage tank

The garden is no longer just a project — it is the school’s main food basket and learning centre.

“Without this garden, we wouldn’t have the resources or practical knowledge we have today,” shared one student.

Chikova Secondary School stands as a powerful example of how sustainable projects can transform education and livelihoods at the same time. 🌍💚

💧 WATER – A CRUCIAL RESOURCE THAT ENHANCES LIVELIHOOD OPPORTUNITIES 💧

Water is the heartbeat of life — essential for both people and the planet. From nurturing crops and sustaining livestock to ensuring hygiene and supporting industries, water fuels every aspect of our livelihoods. It strengthens food security, health, and economic growth, making it one of the most valuable natural resources on earth.

In the Kariba REDD+ Project areas, communities have come to appreciate the true power of water. Through the support of Carbon Green Africa (CGA), water sources have been improved across several wards — transforming dry lands into thriving community gardens. These gardens have become lifelines, providing food, income, and hope for rural families.

With water, fields blossom, communities flourish, and livelihoods thrive. It’s not just a resource — it’s a symbol of resilience, growth, and sustainability.

🌍 “Water is life, and where there is water, there is opportunity.”

🌿 HURUNGWE SUCCESS STORY – SEPTEMBER 2025 🌿
Building Trust, Strengthening Communities Through Kariba REDD+

In Village 24B, Nyamakate area (Ward 7), the community’s journey with the Kariba REDD+ Project (KRP) began in 2012. At first, many residents viewed the initiative with skepticism, believing it to be just another short-term project. But as the years passed, their outlook changed — KRP proved different.

Carbon Green Africa (CGA) through KRP trained and empowered communities with sustainable projects and long-term solutions. From expanding gardens to building lasting water infrastructure, the project has brought tangible change to people’s lives.

A recent example was when a community tap connected to the Tashinga Garden tank broke accidentally. Instead of giving up, the villagers, guided by KRP facilitators, worked together to repair and improve the system — building a strong, durable water point that will serve future generations.

Today, Village 24B stands as a symbol of trust, resilience, and community empowerment. The people now say with pride:

“Water is life, and life was brought to us through KRP.”

🥔 HARVESTING TIME IN GARDENS – MBİRE DISTRICT 🥬
Nyambudzi Garden’s First Potato Harvest Brings New Hope

Nyambudzi Garden in Ward 12, one of the vibrant community gardens supported under the Kariba REDD+ Project, continues to thrive as a center of productivity and sustainability. Each year, the dedicated members cultivate a variety of vegetables such as onions, sugarloaf, cabbages, okra, tomatoes, and r**e, providing nutritious food for their families and generating income from local sales.

This year, however, marked a new milestone — the garden members decided to try potato farming for the first time. To their great surprise and excitement, they harvested buckets full of potatoes from just a small portion of land. The success of this trial crop has inspired them to expand potato production next season.

Their achievement demonstrates how innovation and determination can improve food security, household nutrition, and livelihoods. The Nyambudzi Garden farmers now look forward to a future where their families enjoy balanced diets and where surplus produce strengthens their local economy.

🌿 IMPROVED MARKET FOR BLESSED GARDEN – A STORY OF GROWTH AND INNOVATION 🚛

The success of a rural garden often lies in the ability to adopt improved techniques that increase yields, enhance nutrition, and generate income — and Blessed Garden in Sinampande Ward 3 has become a shining example of this. With continuous support and training from Carbon Green Africa (CGA) under the Kariba REDD+ Project, as well as community collaboration, Blessed Garden has transformed into a thriving hub of agricultural productivity.

Through the adoption of improved farming methods and diversified cropping systems, the garden has significantly boosted production and expanded the variety of vegetables cultivated. This growth created a surplus that opened doors to new market opportunities and steady income generation.

In September 2025, the garden members took a bold step — they hired a truck to transport their produce beyond the project area to reach larger markets. This initiative paid off, as they earned better prices for their vegetables, enabling them to meet family needs, pay school fees, and improve their overall livelihoods.

Blessed Garden also made history in the project area by being the first to successfully grow broccoli, a crop previously considered unsuitable for local conditions. Despite the absence of a local market for broccoli, the farmers identified an opportunity and transported their harvest to Victoria Falls, where demand was higher. The experiment exceeded expectations, revealing the fertility and potential of Binga’s soils and inspiring other farmers to explore similar ventures.

Today, Blessed Garden stands as a model of innovation and resilience, showing how knowledge, teamwork, and determination can unlock prosperity in rural communities.

🌱 IMPROVING DIET AND ENSURING FOOD SECURITY IN RURAL HOMES 🌱

Nutritional gardens are transforming rural communities by improving dietary diversity, reducing food expenses, and boosting household incomes through the sale of fresh produce. They also promote community cohesion and climate-smart agriculture, strengthening resilience in rural homes.

A shining example is the newly established garden in Sinansengwe Ward 4, Malinda Village, where farmers received training from KRP, AmalimaLoko, and Agritex officers. Among them is Mr. Richard Mutale, who first learned nutritional gardening through KRP several years ago.

Mr. Richard and his family have set up a thriving family garden, irrigated by pumping water from a nearby river. The garden thrives thanks to family labour, with women playing a key role in daily management. The family now enjoys a balanced diet, and surplus vegetables are sold to generate income.

This success story reflects the power of collective action in food security and rural livelihood improvement. Across all seven KRP operational wards, viable nutritional gardens are flourishing—proof that the training-of-trainers (ToT) model continues to equip communities with knowledge for sustainable management.

🥬 Today, families enjoy fresh produce close to home, and community gardens stand as symbols of resilience, empowerment, and transformation.

🌱 Hurungwe Success Story 🌱
Mulching Saves the Day at Chikova Secondary School Garden

Since its relocation in April 2023, the Chikova Secondary School nutritional garden in Hurungwe Ward 9 has faced its share of challenges despite having access to water. With the guidance of KRP facilitators and local Agritex Officers, members received training on improved gardening practices—among them, the often-overlooked technique of mulching.

In July, garden members applied mulch to their tomato and cabbage beds, not fully convinced of its real impact. Then came the unexpected: the solarised borehole broke down in early August, leaving the garden without water for 17 long days. With tomatoes in their flowering stage, the situation looked dire.

But to everyone’s surprise, the crops remained green, firm, and healthy, showing no signs of wilting despite the water crisis. Mulching had done its magic—retaining soil moisture, protecting roots, and keeping the crops thriving until the borehole was repaired.

👏 Inspired by this experience, the garden members are now collecting more mulch and spreading the word to other community gardens: “Don’t wait for a water crisis—mulch before it happens!”

This story is a powerful reminder that practical application of KRP trainings transforms theory into real-life resilience—saving not just gardens, but also ensuring food security and livelihoods. 🌍✨

🚰 Community Participation in Action | Mbire Ward 3 🚰

The Madzomba community in Ward 3 faced a serious challenge—crossing the busy Kanongo–Mushumbi road to fetch water from their borehole tap near Madzomba Primary School. With heavy traffic coming from both Kanongo and Mozambique, the risk to villagers was high.

Instead of waiting for outside help, the community came together with a spirit of unity and self-reliance. ✊ They contributed funds to purchase plumbing fittings, 4 bags of cement, 2 garden taps, hose clamps, and solvent cement. They also requested a 10m x 32mm poly pipe to extend the line and add another tap for convenience.

Working hand-in-hand, the community dug a trench across the road, laid the pipes, built tap aprons and a water trough, and even fenced the new taps to protect them from livestock.

Today, the villagers can access safe, clean water right on their side of the road—without risking their lives crossing traffic. 🚦💧

👏 This story reflects the power of community participation in Mbire: when people unite, they can turn challenges into lasting solutions that improve lives.
