South African Activist Phakel’umthakathi Announces Plans to Join Zimbabwe Protests on 31 July
Johannesburg - Nkosikhona Ndabandaba, the South African anti-immigration campaigner widely known as Phakel’umthakathi, has declared he will travel to Zimbabwe to participate in planned nationwide demonstrations scheduled for 31 July.
In statements circulated on social media platforms, particularly Facebook, Ndabandaba said he intends to march with Zimbabweans towards State House in Harare, while emphasising respect for local laws.
The announcement has been shared widely among activist circles linking South Africa’s anti-foreigner protests to Zimbabwe’s domestic grievances.
In a more recent Facebook post, Phakelumthakathi urged Zimbabweans to "stand up fight,you have our support."
He wrote: "African unity is not through the words of mouths of corrupt politicians. Do not be fooled by South African politicians who are benefiting from your country’s resources and then take podiums and vomit rubbish."
He added: "African Unity will be realised through democratic and proper functioning African countries."
"Stand up and fight until they kill you all Zimbabwe 🇿🇼 Zimbabwe 🇿🇼 Zimbabwe 🇿🇼" he concluded.
The 31 July action, referred to by some organisers as “Shut Down Zimbabwe,” aims to protest alleged corruption, misgovernance, and economic hardship under President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration.
Opposition figures, including Madzibaba veShanduko, have urged mass participation, with calls for a complete shutdown of activities.
Zimbabwean authorities have responded with warnings, describing the planned protests as potential threats to peace and stability.
Senior officials, including ZANU-PF’s July Moyo, have cautioned against actions that could cause disturbances.
Ndabandaba rose to prominence in South Africa earlier this year as a leading voice in the “March and March” campaign against illegal immigration and foreign nationals operating businesses.
He has consistently called for peaceful but firm protests, distancing himself from violence and looting during the 30 June actions in South Africa.
It remains unclear whether Ndabandaba will receive official entry or cooperation from Zimbabwean authorities, or the exact scale of his planned involvement. Social media posts framing him as “Zimbabwe’s own Phakel’umthakathi” suggest growing symbolic appeal among some critics of the Harare government.
As of Monday, no formal confirmation from Zimbabwean police or immigration services has been issued regarding his intended visit.
The situation continues to develop amid heightened political tensions ahead of the end-of-month deadline.
