Africa has 54 sovereign countries—the most on any continent—and is the second largest continent in terms of both land area and population. Africa is bounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, by the Red Sea to the northeast, and by the Indian Ocean to the southeast. Africa is a vast continent spanning over 8,000km (5,000 mi) north to south and 7,500km (4,800 mi) east to west (not including islands) and contains a wide array of peoples, skin colours, religions, and cultures. Africa contains the world's longest river—the 6,650km long (4,100 mi) Nile River running from Burundi to Egypt—while the Congo River in the DRC is the second largest in terms of discharge as well as the deepest with a depth of over 230m (750 ft) in some spots. Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro is the world's tallest free-standing mountain at 5,890m (19,340 ft). Djibouti's Lake Assal is the second lowest point on Earth, the saltiest lake outside Antarctica, and one of the hottest places on Earth.

Integration is evidently the ultimate rational response to the challenges now facing the continent. The demands for integration are precise; concerned parties must wholly co-operate and fully commit to understanding one another.

Regional integration is a development priority for Africa. All Africans, not just policy makers and decision makers, have a role to play in making integration a reality for the continent.

Integration matters in Africa. It affects what people can buy; the variety of what is on offer at the local market; how easily citizens move between countries; where individuals travel for leisure or for work; how cost-effective it is to keep in touch; where people choose to study or look for a job; how to transfer money to family
or get start-up capital for a business.

Africa has some of the most abundant natural
resources in the world, many of which are yet to be
tapped. These include not just minerals and oil, but
also bountiful possibilities for clean energy. But natural
resources are not Africa’s only advantage. While
Western countries are shouldering the burden of aging
populations, Africa is the world’s youngest continent.
If it invests in education and training to develop the
potential of its youth, Africa could become one of the
most dynamic and productive of economies.

The mineral industry of Africa is the largest mineral industries in the world. Africa is the second biggest continent, with 30 million km² of land, which implies large quantities of resources. For many African countries, mineral exploration and production constitute significant parts of their economies and remain keys to economic growth.

Rising commodity prices have been an
important factor behind Africa’s growth
over the last 15 years, particularly in major
oil-exporting countries such as Nigeria
and Angola. However, Africa’s economic
progress has derived from diverse sources
and, according to McKinsey, the large
majority of recent growth has come from
non-commodity sectors. Underlining
this, one of Africa’s fastest growing
economies in recent years has been
Ethiopia; a country with meagre mineral
resources, whose growth has originated
from industries such as manufacturing,
agriculture and construction.

Sub-Saharan GDP growth is forecast
to move back above 5% in 2016, and
to strengthen in subsequent years. This
suggests that, as many African economies
have diversified and reduced their
dependency on commodities, the recent
collapse in oil prices may have a less
severe impact on Africa than historical
commodity price downturns. With sectors
such as telecommunications and financial
services being increasingly important
drivers of growth, Africa will maintain
its position as one of the world’s fastest
growing economic regions.

Africa’s growth accelerated from 3.7 per cent in 2013
to 3.9 per cent in 2014, which was slower than had
been forecasted in the 2014 edition of the RECENT ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENTS IN AFRICA report.
East and South Asia is the only region that grew
faster than Africa, at 5.9 per cent (figure 1.1). The
growth was underpinned by private consumption
and gross capital formation, supported by improved
governance and macroeconomic management; continued urbanization; a still-rising middle class
that is driving aggregate demand; diversified trade
and investment ties with emerging economies; and
tighter regional integration and trade partnerships
in the region.
